hi all,
my lo has suspected milk protein allergy/lactose intolarence so we fought it out with dr to try him on nutramigen. At first he just wouldn't feed but now he feeds but cries after and sucks his hands with hunger. It's so thin i think it's just not filling him up. He's been guzzling 6 to 7 5oz ottles a day and he usually only has 5. He also seems to be displaying relux signs due to the thin formula.

Can any help or share a similar experience? I don't know what to do for him and i feel like i'm on my own with it all :(

his symptoms were:
arching back/pulling up legs
excesive wind both ends
throwing up after every feed various amounts
constipation/diarrhea
eczma on face/scalp
crying during and after feeds

we've tried:
bottles: dr browns, tt anti cholic, tt regular and now using mam anti cholic
formula: aptamil, apt comfort, apt hungry baby, sma gold, sma lf, hipp organic, now on nutramigen.
Meds: infacol, gripe water, now using dentinox

symptoms now:
turning head from side to side
searching
sucking hands
spitting up
drying for short time after feed, poss still hungry

what about soymilk?

or is that the same thing?

saw my hv today and she didn't seem keen on giving him soy based milk as she said babies with unknown allergies are usually allergic to soy if allergic to cows milk protein. He seems really settled and she's prescribed carobel to thicken it and fill him up a bit more so fingers crossed that'll help with the hunger.

good luck i really hope it works out for you, let us know how it goes!

Soy formula is not recommended in the UK anymore as it in itself is highly allergenic; it contains massive amounts of sugar and lacks certain vitamins, plus there are concerns about hormone levels as well. One of my LOs had the same problem; he was very severely allergic to both lactose and casein to the extent that if one drop of a dairy product was even near him (say if he handled an empty carton where a milk drink had been inside); his whole body would come out in hives and his airway would swell up. In our case though I was advised to continue BF as I had been doing so; because they didn't feel sure he would thrive on any of the hypoallergenic formulas and they couldn't guarantee he wouldn't react to them because his allergy was that serious. I have heard that weight gain and baby feeling full can be less on this type of formula, I hope the carobel works and your LO is feeling better and settled soon xx

we had this same issue and she is on nutramigen, at 2 weeks old we were told to put rice in her formula and later we had to start putting oatmeal instead because it was still too thin. I know that is not the norm, but it is what her doctor told us to do...

Its a shame and really surprising they don't do a thickened but completely hypoallergenic formula
