Does anyones LO have oral thrush? Mine has for a few days now and the doctor prescribed a type of Nystatin called Nystan.. does anyone know if it works? LO wont take it down, its a 1ml dropper 4 times a day after feeds and she cant take it down! every time i put it in her mouth she spits it straight out, its probably just my LO as she does the same with gripe water lol!
But does any one know if its good enough that the effects will work even if the liquid has only touched her mouth for a second or two?

Thanks xx

for an adult you are supposed to swish it round your mouth and swallow. i thhink aslong as it is touching the thrush it should work but not 100% sure

Yeah I had oral thrush in pregnancy because of the inhaler i take, it's a mouthwash, so as the PP said, as long as it's being swished in there it should be fine, not sure if they should swallow it, i was told not to xx

ask for miconazole gel, it works better and they can't spit it out :)

Our LO had Nystatin with the dropper, to be given before feeding, she hated it (Not surprised as it stinks of aniseed) I used to do a little drop at a time and gently rub it into her tongue with a finger, or you could try putting the drop on your finger and then rubbing it into her tongue that way.
HTH

It should be ok, it's quite gloopy stuff so it probably clings to their mouth quite well. I found it better than the gel, which I worried about using as Holly was newborn when she had thrush. The other way I used both nystatin and the gel was to put it on the dummy - it coated her mouth and she wouldn't spit the dummy out because she loved it too much lol! x x

We went through 2 pots of the stuff as it didn't work for LO. She loved the taste of it though, smelt like cherries.

If it doesn't work, maybe ask for daktarin gel. We didn't end up using it as it went on it's own, but a lot of mums suggested it on here when I asked advice.

x

They probably won't give you the gel because it's use is not for young babies anymore, at least that's what I was told. The nystatin is topical, i.e. It needs to touch the thrush directly not be swallowed so getting it in her mouth is priority not getting her to swallow it. Try as another poster suggested to use your finger to wipe it around her mouth. Or something similar.

We had two doses of the cherry one (really runny) which, although he seemed to swallow it, did clear up what was on his tongue. We had another dose which was a thicker yellow gloopy one which stuck inside his mouth a lot more. Went back to HV yesterday because after the 3 weeks he still has it on the sides on his mouth and she said she couldn't prescribe anymore. She rang the docs and we've got some miconazole gel. You just rub this into his mouth twice a day. I'm hoping it will work better as it seems to stick more :)

Thanks for this thread!

Lily has it too and has been prescribed Nystatin(?) and she's got to take 1ml 3 x a day.. But they gave me a spoon! A SPOON! How are you meant to give a month old baby something on A SPOON! lol :S! Anyway if I do manage to get it in her mouth she spits it out too :/

We are on our third round of Nystatin (needless to say it is not working). I think it is ok if they spit it out and don't swallow it as it just needs to touch the thrush. My doctor said we could use our pinky finger or a gauze pad to "paint" the thrush patches with the stuff. I have been doing this 4 times a day and it is not going away!!! I am hoping it clears on its own as the pediatrician said that there was nothing else they would prescribe for it.

The reason the gel is not recommended for young babies anymore is that it needs to be applied carefully and in a small quantity, nothing to do with the ingredients and more for people who may buy the gel OTC and use too much which could be a choking hazard; if your GP has advised you to use it it is perfectly fine and safe. xx

You need to paint the whole of the inside of their mouths, not just the patches, as there can be thrush spores anywhere.

As said earlier, acidophilus will help x

We have the yellow Nystan and just started it as I couldn't seem to get the daktarin gel on the patches as he would just start sucking in my finger!!
Bit worried now tho that it won't work after reading some of these posts? Is he supposed to swallow it or not? The dummy idea is good tho!!

He will swallow some of it, thsts inevitable. The longer it stays in his mouth the better - that's one of the reasons gel can be more effective.

Nystatin does work in about 40% of cases, you might be one of those x

I hope we are! It has only just appeared in his mouth. He had the nappy rash and I had it in my boobs but have stopped bfeeding hoping that will help but it seems he has got it again when I am not even bfeeding! Very upsetting!

^^ Echo this - my DD and I both had thrush when I was feeding her and Nystatin did nothing for her. After doing my research on Daktarin I decided I would use it. I bought it OTT (lied and said it was for DH ) and it worked a treat.

Acidophilus - I can't stress how good it is! Especially when lo has it in their mouth and nappy rash. It probably means they have it in their tummies too. Acidophilus will help fight it through their whole system.

If there has been no change within 3 days of starting the nystatin, go back to the docs x

I am taking the acidophilus but dont see how a baby could?? I have huge capsules to swallow. I might go back tomorrow or on Sunday if no change - thank god my doctors is always open! Feel like I have been living there since having a baby!!
