I cannot believe the change in my milk supply just from eating oatmeal for breakfast. My LO recently started tugging at my nipples after nursing for a while and kicking her legs and grumbling in frustration before deciding she was done nursing. Then an hour and a half later she would want to nurse again. I am doing quite a lot of heavy exercise so I started to wonder if I was having a supply problem (even though I am drinking gallons of water and have met with a dietician to try to prevent supply issues due to heavy exercise). Yesterday I had oatmeal for breakfast and LO did not tug at my nipples at all and only woke ONCE in the night to nurse (as opposed to her usual 3-4 times). So I had oatmeal again this morning and have been able to pump a 5 oz bottle of milk just from pumping out what was left in the breast after 3 nursing sessions. I'm so excited! Prior to this I would be lucky to pump 5 oz in a week! If anyone is having supply issues, add oatmeal to your diet, it is amazing!

I too have read the benefits of oatmeal...didn't know how great it was though and thanks for sharing  I'll definitely be eating this when I start breastfeeding

I have always had a great milk supply. I always, everyday, eat an egg white omelet with spinach and oatmeal with a little banana. This is literally everyday. I prep the day before so I can just throw things in the microwave when I wake up. I didn't really think that there was anything to the oatmeal, and I read spinach is also good for supply. Maybe there really is something to it!! Thanks for posting so I can share with other breastfeeding friends that have issues with supply.

I should also say that I have breastfeed from day 1 (never pumped) and still am. My LO has slept through the night since 4 months with a little sleep training. Everyone else I know says that until 1 year their LO has woken up for feedings in the middle of the night. Who knows, maybe it is something with my milk and good nutrition.

Yep! I always notice that within a few days of stopping the oatmeal, my supply takes a nosedive. Glad I like it or it would get old really fast. Lol

Yay that's great. Have heard oatmeal is really good for milk supply :)

I accidentally discovered the effect of oatmeal on my supply when breast feeding my first. I have a good supply anyway, but the difference that oatmeal made was so significant that there was no mistaking it.

Stupid question does it have to be cooked or can you have the oatmeal in muesli

I love to eat muesli :)

I hope it makes a difference as for some strange reason I have this fear that I don't have enough milk... No reason why

Well the effects of the oatmeal seem to be short lived. The last two night my LO woke every 2 hrs to feed and her stomach was growling so loud every time she woke. My left breast has basically dried up it seems, she does not like nursing from the left side and when I try to manually express the left side after I feel a let down I only get a drop or two out of it. She has been tugging at my right nipple again while feeding. This morning I doubled the amount of oatmeal I am eating (so uncomfortably full!) and I am going to make lactation cookies today. I am finding this very stressful, I had such an oversupply at the beginning I never thought I would be in this situation. I may have to back out of the Ironman race that I am training for if the exercise is affecting my ability to feed my baby.

I don't know if you have tried it or if you would be able to do this but I find that instead of doubling foods to keep it normal but eat every couple hours. So you don't over stuff yourself and feel miserable. Maybe have snacks with oats in it or smoothie... It can really help supply to eat even small amounts throughout the day like that.

Thanks I will try that! I also picked up some mother's milk tea today, so hopefully the oatmeal, tea, and lactation cookies will work their magic!

Oatmeal is truly a godsend for supply. I also put some real butter in there (good for the hindmilk) and it helps a lot! During cluster feeds I like to eat extra bowls of cheerios

I use to get dehydrated all the time before my pregnancy so I always worried about dehydration while nursing. I was also concerned about my supply, so I started making oatmeal m&m cookies. It boosted my supply, but to keep the supply I had to make sure I was drained after each feeding. Since it's a supply and demand system it makes sense. After every feeding I would pump for 5-10 min to make sure I was empty. I also invested in the hospital grade spectra pump. I love my new pump!
