I'm going to be one of the ones stuck in the 70's with a bin of napisan (if I can even get hold of it) as the water supply here is dismal and the electricity situation is also quite bad. Although we are in the incredibly fortunate position of living with DH's family (they have a live-in maid who does housework and laundry, we have access to her and give her a bonus for it) I'll be too paranoid to do anything but wash LO's nappies myself (by hand if necessary!), at least for the first wee while. They also have to be ironed out here or there's a risk of having putzi flies lay their eggs on laundry that's left out to hang dry, and if the eggs aren't killed by the ironing heat then bad icky things can happen that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy, never mind your child.
A friend of mine has just given me 10 terries and some covers from her own stock, and I have another friend who also kept her diapers from her last pregnancy who is looking them out for me. I may need more than the 30 or so that are recommended to buy because of the power/water situation, but I am undaunted. More effort and tiredness for me still beats the extortionate prices being charged for 'sposies here!
Where the heck do you live?? Yikes, I'm so impressed you're still going cloth! *shudder* I'd be too scared to even wear clothes...and I live in Australia where virtually every insect can and WILL bite or sting and under every rock you can expect to find a venomous spider...power to you girl!
On another note, YAY thanks gals, I am DEF going to be using cloth terries now. I DO have a washer AND a dryer AND I don't need to worry about creepy crawlies laying eggs and eating my baby's butt when I hang them on the line, so I'm convinced.
So I DO or DON'T need to soak them anymore...?
