I've been disappointed with our dietitian, Connor is slow to gain weight, he was severe IUGR and has since been diagnosed with a chromosome deletion in which failure to thrive and weight gain issues are common. Despite knowing this the dietitian won't prescribe anything other than nutrini 1kcal/ml. We know there is a 1.5 kcal/ml version but she insists we need to home fortify which we do anyway.
We have another appointment in Feb and I don't know if to cancel it or just go and see if she prescribes anything else to give him a boost. He is 2yr old and has only just gone over 17lb.

I was just wondering what experience other people have had with their dietitians.

Holly is under dietician care. She was on infatrini and it was only when she was over 8k she was moved onto paediasure plus which is 150kcal/100ml. There is also fortini. Not sure what the difference between the two is as they both come with different flavours and have the same calories.

Apart from prescribing milk she has been pretty useless. I went at 18 months and she took her weight and glanced at dob and said so she is 6 months. I said no she was born in 2010 not 2011. If she was 6 months I wouldn't be here as she would be a great weight!

If your lo is over 8k I would ask for a different dietician as I don't understand why she wouldn't want him to have more calories.

Good luck xx

We had real trouble with our first dietician, which we were referred to thrpugh the HV. Abby was dairy intolerant and her only advice was switch to soya when she is one, and keep trying her with bits of dairy to see if she is over it. She never weighed her or anything.

Then at her 18 month assessment with the peads consultant, we expressed concern about her weight and she arranged for another dietician to come and chat with us and she basically told us where we were going wrong. The other woman had failed to mention soya isn't high enough in fats (she just kept banging on about calcium) and gave us so much information about the intolerance and we discovered the other issues we were having with Abby and foods came down to an issue with textures, which is common with the intolerance.

She prescribed Calogen supplement, which Abby was on for about 6 months or so. I would ask for a referral to another dietician if I were you.

for some reason my lil boy was never assigned a dietician, although all the other prems were! when he wasnt gaining weeight well my hv referred us and i was told that they wouldnt accept referral because 'he should already have that car in place'- wtf!! i gave up on dieticians at that point!

We had a new (community) dietitian become involved during the summer, and I was much impressed by her. She didn't nag about Andrew's inability to hand feed, nor his restrictive diet, she completely understood our frustrations and insisted that he won't still be drinking fortified milk by the time he is 11 years old ...

She switched him from Infatrini (1 kcal/ml), which is only meant for babies up to 2 years and/or 8kg, onto Fortini (1.5 kcal/ml). He has the unflavoured variety. His consumption has gone down slightly but not too much.

tbn all Mckenzie's dietitian does is prescribe milk and to say add cheese and milk with everything!! Mckenzie was on Nutriprem2 from birth to 6months then SMA high energy and when he finally got to 8kg she changed him to Paediasure which is 1.0kcal/ml which was in Aug and now he weighs 8.73kg so it doesn't seem to be working much. However she wants him down to one of these by the time we see him next in Jan currently he has one and half bottles of it today!!! Then she wants to take him off the milk to encourage him to eat more!!! But at moment he is eating quite alot esp for his size, so when she does take him off the milk hopefully he won't loss weight!

Whereas our dietitian said that if Andrew wasn't eating a wide range of solids by now, we probably wouldn't be able to progress that for a year or two (because he's hit the 'neo-phobic' two's) and we should continue to get calories into him by any method possible - if that means still having 3 bottles of milk per day, so be it.

its so confusing!! Tbn i think the milk is the reason he is maintaining his weight he loves it and loves choosing which flavour he wants! And as he rearly eats meat or quarn stuff at least i know he is getting enough vits with the milk. Oh y do they all have diff ideas!!

Thanks for the replies. Connor only has milk now morning and night and drinks about 6oz each time.
We already see the head dietitian, I don't know if another one would do much different.
