On a downer right now

I think I'd feel the same Marley. Mainstream is a great idea in principle, but it has to work. Better to ease him into schooling and if he is able later he can be moved to mainstream if appropriate. Either way he will get a good education.

My Niece (who is now 15) had exactly the same problem. She didn`t utter one single word until she was 8 yrs old, even in school. She had full understanding of language but just didn`t speak. She found other ways of "asking" for things.Physios, doctors etc told her Mum she just would never speak and to basically "give up".Her Mum kept perservering though and was convinced that as she got older it was just a habit she had got into ....it turned out to be "selective mutism" .As a baby it had hurt to talk (due to spasms that may have been caused by being ventilated as a baby). As she grew older she just didn`t do it(although capable) and it became a way of life for her.Through a very good speech therapist she began to talk and now never stops!!
I dont know if this is what your baby has but its maybe worth a mention :)

Thankyou everyone for the replies.

Millie saw the speech therapist at the hospital this morning and he did (as far as possible) reassure me. It seemed like a much more positive meeting, which is what I needed, it was all starting to feel a bit doom and gloom before! The sessions in our home are going well. Millie is responding to the makaton signs the therapist does with her, and has started to do a few herself. I'm trying to keep this up at home too, but my knowledge of makaton signing is limited right now. I have had my name on the waiting list to do a course for ages, but apparently they have not yet announced when the next course will even be run! Thankgod for Mr Tumble!!

I wanted to say that my mil told me
My husband never spoke a single word till he was around 2.5yrs of age and he wasn't prem. she took him to speech specialists and hospitals etc, spent a fortune until a clinic nurse suggested putting him into childcare to be with children his own age. He was very observant and understand what was being said to him it's just that he wouldn't speak. After 6mths in childcare he was talking non stop and at 47 is still taking non stop.
