I know this is probably a grey area question, but here it goes. I have a short luteal phase but am ovulating regularly. My GP says it's a luteal defect and will be referring me to expensive fertility specialists here in New Zealand. Clomid is apparently very pricey here and not readily available (must go to an FS and wait to get in, etc.). I wonder if it is possible to buy it online and take the exact same dosage and directions as women on here do? Has anyone heard of people doing this and if so, what is a way to find a reputable supplier? I see a lot of it offered online by good looking companies, but want to be cautious.

I know, I know this sounds crazy and should be under a doctor's supervision. but when my clock is ticking loudly (I'm in my early 30's and have been TTC for a year), I will do anything to up my chances at this point. We want a family so badly.

I have heard of people doing it but to be honest its not safe at all really. I am a prescibed clomid user and you need to be supervised as the effects can be dangerous if you are not-

OHSS – Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome is a possible side-effect of clomid. Clomid directly stimulates the ovaries into producing eggs. This is why taking clomid increases a woman’s chances of having twins or triplets. In most cases OHSS can be resolved by administering fluids, however, in extreme cases the condition can be life threatening. OHSS causes bloating and pain in the abdomen (which could perhaps be mistaken for an ectopic pregnancy if your doctor doesn’t know you’ve been on clomid). OHSS can also damage the ovaries and threaten future fertility. A woman on prescribed clomid is monitored carefully by her fertility doctor to prevent the development of OHSS. A woman who takes clomid unprescribed probably won’t tell her doctor about it. This means her treatment is not supervised and she takes on all these risks without the benefit of expert medical knowledge.

Contraindications – clomid is not suitable for women who suffer from a range of conditions which cause infertility. For example, women who a have enlarged ovaries, ovarian cysts, endometriosis or uterine fibroids. The drug is also risky for women who are allergic to any of its components or have a tendency to develop blood clots. Clomid is also dangerous for women who suffer from some forms of depression or from liver disease. A licensed fertility doctor is the only person qualified to determine whether or not it’s safe for a woman to take clomid.

Multiple Pregnancy – although some women take unprescribed clomid precisely because they want twins, multiple pregnancies are always riskier than a regular pregnancy. These risks should be assumed under the guidance of a medical professional.

Personally I wouldnt recommend it but its your personal choice, and if youre not being monitored you will not know whether that dose is working for you- 50mg didnt work for me so im trying 100mg next round- higher doses are not always best in some people- in some it can have bad effects.

hope this helped you a little

Hey I'm in New Zealand and using clomiphene (clomid), I was referred to fertility associates as soon as i saw my GP as I have pcos and I'm a high risk pregnancy. But the initial consultation with them was $250 I think and then I have had to pay for the cost of meds (provera and clomiphene) and in all honesty I don't think it has gone over $30 for the meds.

I really wouldn't go for the meds over the net just because you don't always know what your getting and like scerena said there are some major risks.

Again it's your choice, I'd say go for it! Because Clomid/Fertomid (exact same thing) is actually quite cheap to produce (This is not a drug that is cloned and faked because of how cheap it is to make, no point!) it is readily available worldwide and can be bought from https://www.unitedpharmacies.co.uk/product.php?productid=451&cat=0&page=1 -

I'm only recommending this one as a friend of mine has used them and she got pregnant on her 2nd round.

You should be monitored to see if it's working. Why not just book a day 12-16 follicol scan privately so you can at least get checkout out?

I've used Clomid before and know what dose etc what works for me so I'd do it but I have quite a few left over from my last prescription!

Hi Globetrecker
Were it not for the fact that I live in the UK we could be the same person!
Also in my early 30s, TTC for a year with regular ovulation and a short luteal phase. I saw a fertility specialist through the NHS who told me that he didn't really think short luteal phases affect fertility (there's a lot of evidence on both sides but no-one really knows for sure) but I pestered him for Clomid - he gave me enough for 3 courses.
I had my first course (50mg cd2-6) last cycle and while my lining was fine, no hyperstimulation etc, luteal phase wasn't really affected (it was 10 days instead of 8-9). So an improvement, but I wanted more!
This cycle I've upped to 100mg and will let you know how I get on.
I know how tempting it is to buy online and I've considered it several times (I may well resort to that if the hospital are unwilling to prescribe me more courses). But, I do have the assurance that I had an ultrasound to check everything was working as it should.
Perhaps you could try soy isoflavones - that may also be another option for me if I don't buy online. If taken correctly soy seems to have a similar effect to Clomid but I'M NO EXPERT.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

i was going to buy it online, so docs finally gave in and gave it me. im glad i didnt get it online, i had to up my dose because i werent ovulating (something which you wouldnt know unless you were having blood tests of the doc or doing your temps with opk's) and then they told me to stop taking it as 100mg still didnt work. so i think it is worth waiting that little bit longer.
im not here to preach, because i would of done it myself if they didnt give it me!

Personally I would either wait until your appointment OR like was mentioned book in privately to make sure everything is ok. I just think you should be monitored because of the risks but it's up to you- I would buy the clomid online if I was getting monitored or if I run out and they won't prescribe me anymore just because I will know what's a safe dosage for me- I think if you really want it just get a test done the first month to make sure it's working how it should be as my second round has to be upped in the dosage x

Go with what your gut tells you to do. I have thought about ordering online too we have already done the RE thing for my last pregnancy and OH won't go for all the testing again. Keep us posted.

I heard Soy Iso's were 'natures clomid' I'm not going to bad mouth it as I know some ladies on here have tried it and it's worked. For me personally it completely messed my cycles up, going from 26 days to 48 days for 2 cycles. My last cycle has just gone down to 32days.

We live in South Australia and we went to see the doc 5 weeks ago, already we have had all our tests done and we see the doc in 2 weeks to get our results and will more than likely be starting clomid in 3 weeks, all in all it will be 8 weeks it's taken ... bloody good going in my books ! You wouldn't get that on the NHS in the UK! All our tests and appointments were free but for clomid it's costing us $350, if I need it with the FHS it'll be $550 and to track my cycles will be $200 ... So that could be a whopping $750 a month ... but it will be so worth it if it happens.

Personally I wouldn't trust anything like that off the net, I've read some bad stories from people doing that.

Good luck hun, I hope you get your precious bundle of joy soon :dust:

xx

Wonderful insight and responses from all of you, thank you for giving me a more balanced view of things! I better not do the Clomid thing on my own (although so tempting!) I don't know enough about it to be regulated appropriately. Someone mentioned soy isoflavones and I may try that and then head on off to FS.

We've done the initial rounds of tests and we both check out normally (I ovulate like clockwork and have charted my bbt, used OPK's for a year and had the blood work). Short luteal phases the entire time though and Clomid is said to help lengthen the LP.

Thanks ladies, we're all in this together ... even if our ideas sound a little desperate and crazy!!!
