Well it's not even been 3 weeks yet and my right nipple has been tender for the last few days. But today it's been total agony to the point I am almost crying in pain, if OH wasn't here to see I probably would be.

Now my left one is heading the same way! I have been using lanisoh cream, I also alternate from side to side each feed and have been determined to try to keep using the right but in all honesty I just don't know how much longer I can go on. He latches on well so I just don't know why it is now making my nipples agony?

I was aiming for BF for at least 2 months taking it 2 weeks at a time but I am so sore I want to use bottles of formula and maybe some expressed milk. That I could get out. But the truth is I really want to keep going at least until my 4 week mark.

So please any advice, tips or support you can offer would be so welcome as I don't want to give up, not yet.

Is the pain at the start of the feed for about 15 seconds or does it continue through out the duration of the feed?
I know you say he's latching well but have you had your latch checked? If it's definately ok then you are probably just going through the period where your nipples have to adjust and kind of toughen up. I promise you it doesnt last long. :hugs:

I had the health visitor check as I had a bit of a blister on my left nipple from him when we first started and she said all was fine but I might get her to check again on Wednesday when she comes again.

It's mainly for about the first 20 secs but when I am not feeding I am so aware of them in my bra like they are raw.

Just be aware that HVs are often not trained in BFing. If you have a blister to me that says poor attachment although the pain being the first 20 secs says to be they may just be toughening up. I would enquire about BF support groups in the local area - someone there will be better placed to check that latch.

You are doing so well honey so dont give up just yet - you are on the verge of a break-through is my guess :D

:hugs:

I'm sorry, I was the same way..with all 3 of my kids so it was just me adjusting to having something sucking on it all of the time, I was in pain most of the first 2 mo but it got SOoooo much better after that

it will get better!!! a lot of people are probably saying that to you right now but i swear it does! all of a sudden it doesn't hurt anymore.

I had blisters and they bled! and the midwife said maybe baby isn't latching on properly but he was, but he was comforting on them, all the time!! so i gave him a dummy after 2 weeks as they weren't healing.

I also expressed after every feed, so my husband could feed him while i slept/recovered.

It might help to pump for a few days. That's what I did when LO actually drew blood in those first few weeks, and it's led us down an interesting and successful path.

:hugs:
I agree with what Mervs Mum said; if it's for 20 seconds or so at the start of each feed, it could well be that it's just your nipples toughening up (although those 20 seconds can be toe-curlingly painful!) I would also recommend getting the latch checked again, as a blister suggests an incorrect latch to me.

As improbable as it seems at the moment, it WILL get better sweetie. Hang in there, you're doing so well!

I have to say I was the same hun. When her suck first starting kicking in big time. I was nearly in tears grabbing the arm of the sofa as she sucked for the first let down. It lasted about a week for me, think it is diff for every though hun. Some women don't get it at all. It's because they have to suck a lot harder at first to get the foremilk out then they don't need to suck as hard so the initial sucks are toe curling.

It does get easier and after 13 weeks my nipple only feel comfy in a bra with a pad in them as the seems always rub and they are very sensitive.

HTH hun xxx

Thank you!:hugs:

I got my blister on my right nipple just after he was born as it took us a few days to get the hang of feeding and getting a good position for both of us....since then the mw and HV became a bit obbsessed by his latch and feeding...also since he dropped too much body weight in the first 5 days. He went from 8lb 11.5oz to 7lb 12.5oz, but the next day hw was 8kb, then a few days later 8ln 2.5oz the he was a whopping 8lb 9oz he gets weighed on Wednesday so hopefully he will have gained more.

I never knew that /hv werent always trained..I just assumed:blush:

My local BF group is a Wednesday so will see if I can get HV to come see me before it so I can get along and cry at them.

Do you think it would be ok to just use my left side and pump the right for a day? But I guess that wont help the toughen up process??? I guess I just have to get a big stick and bite down for the fist few seconds:rofl:
