My son was born yesterday and already my nipples look purple and it hurts more with each feed. I don't understand how I'm getting it so wrong as the midwives were happy with my technique. I feel like the latch is a little shallow. I don't know how to correct it :( feeling very hopeless already.

If the latch is good it's possible that your boons are just getting use to be used. At the beginning I took a lot of warm showers and put frozen wash cloths on my boobs. I also used coconut oil to help keep from cracking.

Squeeze a bit of your milk out and rub on to your nipped, will help them heal. Massage them in the shower, put a warm flannel on before feeds and if at all possible, can you stay topless around the house? If any clothes rubbed on me during tthat first week it was horrid so I just walked around half naked and let the air get to them :) you are only day one, in a week you will be healed up and it won't hurt. Congratulations on the birth of your lo too! X

Above advice is good, but if you feel the latch is shallow, get it checked out. Check for lip and tongue ties as this can cause problems. The midwives I saw thought my latch was fine too but he has both a lip and posterior tongue tie that went unnoticed until I saw a paediatrician - the 3rd one in his 8 months of life. First 2 didn't see anything wrong but the 3rd was more experienced with it and noticed almost immediately.

Is he taking in enough aerola tissue beneath the nipple? Does his tongue extend over his teeth nicely? When he comes to the breast are you directing the nipple to the roof of his mouth?

Can you see a lactation consultants? Even a midwife with the best of intentions can miss a bad latch

It was painful for me the first couple days before my milk came in. I figured it was because she had to suck harder to get the colostrum out because the nurses said she had a very good latch..once my milk came in about a day later my nips healed and the pain was gone. I used the lanolin ointment and put hot rags on my breast massaged them let them air out between feedings and squeezed out some colostrum and rubbed it on my nipples to help with the chafing and pain. Don't let it get you down the pain goes away and you'll be pleased with yourself for suffering through the pain for your LO.

I put nipple cream on regilously after every feed for the first week, it helped my nipples toughen up :) it does get better x

It hurt me for the first two weeks and my nipples were definitely not looking so hot either. Also in the beginning it was really painful for the first 30 seconds of each feed. Until your milk comes in use lots of lasinoh cream (never miss). Also my dh got me these things called multi mam compresses and they were expensive but soothing. Get those if you can. It took two weeks for my nipples to toughen up and for me to stop feeling like my boobs were going to explode. Now it barely ever hurts unless she starts tugging at them. It will totally get better and I think you just have to grit your teeth and get through it (assuming there are no other issues) but once you get used to it it's smooth sailing pain wise.

Thanks for the advice ladies :) he's started openin his mouth much wider and I can tell his latch is improving, got lots of lanolin cream too. Feeling a bit more positive now, think I was panicking a bit!

He's very sleepy today and looking slightly yellow, not sure what to do :(

They would have checked for jaundice at the hosp, Eric had a yellow tinge and yellowy eyes but MW not concerned at all, and now its totally gone. Do you have a MW visit coming up you could mention it then? X

Those after pains will go in a few days! Mine with #2 were uncomfortable too, as bad as mid-labour! I found myself breathing through some of them lol!!!

Check LO for tongue tie if the pain persists, hang in there!!!

Both mine were sleepy and yellow by day 3. They both had blood taken to check for jaundice. Frankie wad hospitalised for three days as his levels were quite high but Mickey wasn't. Ask your MW when she calls xx

A midwife came over she said he wasn't too yellow or too sleepy for her to be concerned, he just had a brilliant feed too so yay! He's latching on much better now too yippee. X

Sounds like its all coming right for you, thats great. Just takes a few days for you both to get the hang of it! :)

They checked my daughter for jaundice at the hospital and her levels weren't worrisome until the next day when her pediatrician seen her and made us take her to get checked her levels rose which is common in breast fed babies it's harder to get rid of it because they jabber to eat the colostrum and they need the milk to get rid of it. Once you start seeing yellow seedy poos you'll know the levels are going down.

It's very common for babies to have a slight tinge of jaundice, at least 70% of babies have it. My youngest was the least jaundiced of all of mine but he still has a slight yellow tinge to his eyes and his skin is only just completely back to normal and he is nearly 3 weeks. He was never sleepy though. The NICE guidelines that they updated a couple of years ago give advice to midwives for checking jaundice so don't worry, if your son appears considerably more jaundiced at the next midwife visit they will probably test the levels. Then if baby has prolonged jaundice (and for how long is classed as prolonged varies from area to area) they do some extra tests then xx
