I came onto this section of the site to see if I could see anything to do with the sheer agonising guilt I feel about working full time and being away from my son so much, but I think I'm better to go to the parenting section, I'm sure I'll find a lot of guilt there!!!
But, whilst I was here, just thought I would mention Parental Leave. I'm sure you are all well aware of this, but until a few weeks ago I wasnt, so thought I'd share.
Parental leave is a statutory right, therefore, your employer cannot refuse it, they can ask you to take it in a certain way to meet business needs, but not refuse it.
You can take up to 18 weeks per child under 5 (up to a max of 4 weeks per year). It is of course unpaid, but it doesnt alter your contract therefore your annual leave etc remains unchanged.
It is great for the likes of taking time to settle a child into nursery, or to slightly reduce your working week for a set period. I personally have decided to take a half day a week from now until December. It isnt a lot, but it is all I can afford and I just hope that that little bit of just mummy and son time will benefit us both.
Anyway, off to find some more guilty mummies to talk to about working full time...
(there is info on government website re this, and certain employers have different conditions, my employer allows the leave until your child is 14, I think)
