This afternoon my world fell apart as I experienced a heavy bleed that was bright red, a full gush that pooled at the bottom of the loo (sorry if TMI), I really thought it was all over and was in total bits. I called my doc who was amazing and said come in he’d see and scan me immediately. Unfortunately my place of work is an hour and a quarter’s drive which wasn’t the most sedate of drives I have to admit!

The scan showed thank goodness that the baby is fine, growth from my scan a week ago is good (I could see tiny arms & legs for the first time – amazing!!), heartbeat good at 183 bpm.

But the scan also showed a slight separation of the placenta from the uterus wall (otherwise called a partial abruption) which seems to have caused the bleed. No idea what caused it, I was still in shock I think so didn’t ask as many questions as I should have & I’m not finding much info on causes via Dr. Google.

Having come off progesterone suppositories (3 times daily) just 4 days ago he’s now double whammy propping me up with Gestone injections every other day plus Duphaston tablets 3 times daily which I figure supports the uterus. Back in 2 weeks to check progress. In the meantime no sex, no tearing around and generally take it easy (which I have been), I asked if he needed to sign me off on bed rest but he said not necessary.

So whilst the major trauma is over, and I’ve been reassured baby is healthy I do now have something on top of all the usual worries to bug me and play on my mind. Fingers crossed it rectifies itself over the coming weeks :-(

Has anyone else had anything similar, or can anyone advise on likely causes, or is it just ‘one of those things’?

After 5 yrs of trying followed by IVF at the grand old age of 42 I really feel this is my one and only chance so am double terrified of complications.

Worried Loopy here x

Sorry for the long post ....... needing to vent & get it off my chest

I had a huge bleed at almost 14 weeks and thought we lost our baby girl. Ultrasound showed she was fine and that I had a partial tear in the placenta. They called it a subchorionic hematoma which is just a fancy way to say a blood clot. My doctor had me off on bed rest for 4 weeks. Once I didn't have any bleeding for two weeks, I was able to go back to work.

I've had no bleeding for over 6 weeks now and baby is doing great. At my 20 weeks scan, the clot was still there but a lot smaller.

Hang in there! I know it's scary right now but I think you'll be just fine. Try to take it easy as you can and drink lots of water to help stay hydrated and water also helps to keep your uterus from getting overly irritated.

:hugs:

how scary but so glad to hear your little one is okay!! :hugs:

Thank you so much honeyprayer, good to hear these things do happen and aren't necessarily things to be too terrified of (I'm still a bit of a neurotic mess now tho). Glad you and baby are complete fine now, fingers crossed I have the same outcome which I guess looks likely.

I feel totally fine this morning. There was the faintest brown tinge when I wiped but I'd imagine that's left over from yesterday and almost to be expected given the amount I passed yesterday! Staying positive! :flower:

Hi, I'm so sorry you had such a scare. I had a partial placenta abruption with my son's pregnancy. I had a hematoma detected at a 5 week scan when I had some bleeding and the abruption wasn't detected until 19 weeks so the doctor thought the bleed might have caused the tear for me. But he said my prognosis was still good because the bleeding was moving out and away from the tear so the threat of the tear getting worse was minimal.

I was on moderate bed rest from about 5 to 26 weeks when a scan showed the tear had solidified into scar tissue. The doctor also helped ease my mind when he told me our bodies make the placenta 25% bigger than the baby needs so up to 1/4 of it can become damaged without affecting the baby in anyway.

Once my tear had healed I was able to resume normal activities and my son was born healthy at full term.

It is scary but DO NOT GOOGLE!!!! Seriously, Dr. Google is not your friend when you have anything going on with your pregnancy. Even pregnancy books are not good on this topic. "What to Expect When Expecting" only says scary things about partial abruption when my doctor had said weren't true. And I was seeing a high risk specialist at one of our best children's hospitals.

One tiny warning: hematomas and bleeds in the womb can cause false positives during the blood screening test for spina bifida so if you get one try not to panic. My tests came back as 1/300 which my OB had thought was high for someone in her 20s so that's why I was sent to a high risk specialist. It was the specialist who told me that the bleed caused the false positive. My son was fine though. No spina bifida.

Just letting you know as I FREAKED OUT when my blood tests came back positive. I hope you can avoid that extra stress.
