Is now not a good time to ask for a pay rise?!

Iv been at my job for two years now, and although the money is ok, obviously with this one on the way a little more every month wouldnt hurt!! I work my ass off for the place and my department boss is dreading the day my mat leave starts coz of how much workload I take off him. He has told me over and over again that i deserve a pay rise, but whenever we have a proper discussion about it he always seems to say that now isnt a good time to be getting pay rises. Should I just go over his head to the next level, or would that look bad?!
They currently pay me anywhere between 35 and 45 hours overtime a month (like i said, i work my ass off) so they can clearly see from that that i'm willing to put the effort in

We are getting redundancy letters in our department tomorrow too, and although there are only three of us in there, I know i'm safe (thanks to the incompetence of one of my fellow team mates).

I dont know what to do!! the OH and I are saving like mad and putting away a few hundred each month, but it's not easy  I feel like i've got a good case for a pay-rise, but then, who doesnt deserve a pay-rise :winkwink: lol

When is your next review? (although they do say review is the worst time to ask for a raise because everybody wants one at the same time)

I shall be requesting a raise at my next review, and my boss knows this.

IMHO pay rises are about performance. So I'd put all thoughts of why you need the money, out of your head - and just focus on why you deserve it.

Sounds as if there isn't any doubt about your performance.

Bite the bullet. Good luck :)

I am meant to have a review every month...but it happens probably once every three months  The working environment is one where if either I have an issue or if my boss needs to point something out that i'm doing wrong then we just say it (when the room is empty)! I guess that's why the reviews dont happen!

We got our redundancy letters today, so I guess I have to wait until all that is over, but then im on holiday until July!

Is it a good idea to pre-warn your boss that you are going to be requesting a pay-rise or shal I just spring it on him? haha

Entirely depends on you/your boss and the situ.

For me it was in context of the 'no automatic payrise with inflation' letter which all staff got - knowing I have an annual review coming up - and standing my ground.

I find I have to be quite forceful and factual to communicate effectively with my management.

Hmmm i feel now probably wouldn't be a good time, especially if they're laying people off, granted they'll not be paying out their monthy wage but they'll probably have to deal with relevant redundancy payouts.

I guess it can't hurt to ask, but the company is probably strugging (or trying to prevent this occuring) if they're having to lay people off :hugs:
