DH and I have one son who we conceived naturally. After he was born, I went on the Depo birth control shot, gained 50lbs, and developed PCOS. I weigh about 260 lbs. When I got pregnant with ds I weighed 205 lbs. I have had a hard time losing the weight. DH and I were ATTC for 2 1/2 - 3 years with no luck and my cycles were pretty much non-existent. We are now NTNP. My cycles still aren't where they should be- they have been long, but a little more regular (around 42-50 days).

I talked to my doctor yesterday and she is putting me on a diet pill to help and said I need to watch/cut down my carbs in my diet. I know carbs are bad for pcos.

My question is, if I loose some weight, will my cycles become more regular and would it be easier to become pregnant? A lot or a little easier

Yes, it will definitely help. What you also can try is inofolic or buy inositol and take folic acid with it. It's believed to help with pcos patients.

Did they check your insulin level? Extra weight increases insulin resistance which is a main cause of PCOS symptoms. I have PCOS but I am not overweight, I was diagnosed at the age of 23 now I'm 35, I got pregnant naturally 5 times, 3 were chemicals due to low progesterone (again caused by PCOS), I had a healthy pregnancy 5 yrs back & a mmc in April this year (not caused by PCOS)

Regular exercise, low carb diet & losing weight will help in regulating your periods, I never had regular periods when I was younger & overweight & I was on the pill for yrs, I stopped the pill in August last year, I had regular periods every 29-31 days, I got pregnant in Feb this year but it ended in a mmc in April, i had 2 regular periods since then. PCOS didn't affect my fertility but my insulin level is normal & I always make sure to eat a healthy diet.

They did a while back and I'm assuming that's why they tried putting me on Metformin. It didn't do too much. But I'm hoping after I loose some weight, it will help me.

Losing weight with PCOS will absolutely help! I have several friends who did it and naturally conceived babies..even multiples ;)

Oh my! This is really motivating me! :) Keep'em coming!

Found this online for you!
"A modest weight loss can improve high androgen and high insulin levels and infertility. Weight loss of as little as 5% to 7% over 6 months can reduce androgen levels enough to restore ovulation and fertility in more than 75% of women who have PCOS.

Losing weight can be hard, but you can do it. "

Even losing 10 lb (4.5 kg) may help get your hormones in balance and regulate your menstrual cycle

In my personal opinion, Depo is an absolute horrible drug. I was on it for 2 years and gained 10 pounds per shot. Yep, add that together and it was 80 pounds! Not only that but I lost my period completely while I was taking it and didn't get so much as a spot of af for an entire year after I'd stopped taking it. To this date (well, until BFP) my af was still abnormal, sometime having longer cycles, sometimes skipping ovulation completely and missing periods for months and my last shot was in the fall of 2009.

I did develop PCOS (among many other health issues that I'm not sure I can blame on the drug) and over the past year was finally able to lose 40 of the pounds that simply would not budge. I would not recommend this birth control method to my worst enemy. But I did become pregnant after my weight loss, so maybe that was a contributing factor. I wish you luck and hope others see this plea to reconsider taking this birth control method.

Thank you both for your advice! I wonder if that 10 lbs is for people with a high(er) BMI? At the doctor Thursday I weighed in at 259 lbs. I am 5'6". The doctor is watching me closely on this diet pill and I see her every 30 days (today was the first day on the diet pill). To continue on the diet pill, I have to lose at least 12 lbs in the next 30 days, or I cannot continue on it.

Surprised26- Our experiences are are pretty much identical! Depo is evil. My period has been 42-50 days since about February and that is the most regular I have been since getting off depo 4 years ago. I am hoping with weight loss, I will achieve pregnancy. Congrats to you! I hope I can be in your shoes one day soon.

Also, what if you loose the weight before the 6 month time frame? Does that hurt your chances of pregnancy?

Hi hun,

I lost a great amount of weight on my fitness pal. It's an application on the internet that helps you keep track on how much calories you consume a day. You can also go the health section of this forum and ask for friends that can add you on this app. I did and my bnb friends supported me through this journey. Most of us use this app.

I've have PCOS and conceived my first LO on metformin but also loosing half a stone, was super hard to loose it but it worked. I am now pregnant again, conceiving naturally, just from weight loss!

It is harder to loose weight with PCOS but it honestly helps so much! Wouldn't of got pregnant twice without it!

Angelbaby_01- yes! I downloaded MyFitnessPal the other day and it is very helpful! I'm doing well with it so far :)

Bunny_Boo- Your story/experience makes me so happy and hopeful! Thank you so much for sharing!

Definetely helped me. 8 years we TTC for our first. Lost 19kg and got pregnant.

Now I'm 4 weeks with #3.

Best of luck!
