Does anyone in the UK suffer from PCOS? I'm just wondering what help have you been offered?

I've been reading online that there are all sorts of medications to regulate periods and stop the growth of excess body hair, but all my GP has offered me is the contraceptive pill which *might* help. Are these magic treatments only available in the US? Or are they an online hoax to get the hopes up of depressed ladies like me??? I'm so upset!

People don't seem to be able to understand how it affects your life but my body is ruining my life and my mental/emotional health

i have PCOS but only got a diagnosis about a year ago - i went to the doctor numerous times in 6 years about my awol periods and they really were not interested
i finally went to a gp about a mediccal for work and mentioned it (again) and he ran some tests which came back saying i had pcos, he actually told me when i went in for the results to go home and google it :(
the only thing he said was i would very likely need help to concieve, but about 6 months after that i did naturally!!!!!

i would recommend you keep at them, you have to make them listen sometimes
good luck x

The pill worked for me pre TTC but now because of my BP my doc will only allow me to take the mini pill. I'm going to see how my hair growth and spots go and if they get alot worse i'll be off down the docs to get her to do something :)

I was diagnoesd 3 years ago, i havnt been offerd ne help, not on pill because im ttc, after 3 mc's im seeing a specailist but not holding my breath. i think you have to be firm with them! i did all my research online and have just tryd to follow that! my understanding is that the pill does nothing it just masks the effects of pcos! docs in my experiance are the most frustrating people, makes me wonder what i pay taxes for when i get no help from the nhs.

good luck.

My fertility specialist prescribed Metformin for PCOS. I found it useful regulating my periods and maintaining my weight. It didn't make any difference to my skin or hair growth though. I'd been TTC for 20 mths when it was prescribed and 18 mths after that I got my :bfp:. Unfortunately it didn't stick. I am seeing my new doctor tomorrow and am going to see if I can go back on it.

My GPs over the years have known nothing about using Metformin for PCOS and it is not licenced for use for this condition in this country (as far as I know). It is a diabetic medication. Prior to TTC I had been on various contraceptive pills and these had made less difference to my symptoms than Metformin. Ask your GP about this medication. If they seem to know nothing about it ask to be referred to a specialist. Good luck :hugs:
