I talked to a nurse friend of mine yesterday and she had recently read up on PCOS. She said all the symptoms described me perfectly. After looking them up online I was shocked that it described me so well. It explained SOO much. I had no idea. If you have PCOS how did you get it diagnosed and how are you treating it? I'm already on Clomid. Please help!!!

I have been in exactly the same boat.. i have the irregularly long cycles, bad skin breakouts, even had the typical hairy chin, lol (still have). As well as infertility issues (4 years & counting)

PCOS is typically diagnosed via ultrasound, to check for cysts on the ovaries. My doc sent me for one 2 yrs ago and all was clear....however later on i got told that PCOS doesnt always initially come with cysts, which makes sense because you 1st have to have the syndrome in order to then get the cysts! I was also told there is a simple blood test for this. I havent had the blood test yet, as my dr wont refer me, so im seeing a private fertility dr next month & finally may get to know whats wrong :)

Id see a dr. asap, as the chlomid may be going to waste if you have any underlying issues that need addressing. It amazes me how it gets prescribed without a full fertility investigation performed 1st. The fertility specialist i spoke to said they dont do treatment without investigating the cause of the problem fully. It seems that some doctors are just throwing chlomid at every woman without even trying to find out what the problem is (which may be something so simple & easy to treat)

Hope it helps :)

How I was diagnosed: I went to my GYN and told her that I wanted to start TTC, I told her I don't get periods with out it being medically induced. She did blood tests. When they came back she found out that I had a high testosterone, and I was insulin resistant, And then we did an u/s and it showed my ovaries where poly cystic. PCOS differ from person to person. After that she started me on metformin 2000 mg. and referred me to RE.

I was initially told that I have PCOS because I wanted to find out why I hadn't gotten my period in nine months (cool as it was). Immediately after I was told I have PCOS I was told that if I ever wanted to have kids, I better start now. This is what led me to TTC.

I am also currently on metformin (1500 mg/day) and am now on cabergoline because my prolactin levels are also high.

Clomid did nothing for me because of my high prolactin levels. It is not the solution to every problem.

Thanks ladies. The Dr. had tested my prolactin levels when I first went in and they came back fine. She also tested for thyroid problems and that was fine as well. She says she's not worried about me at all and I know she's the Dr. and knows what she's talking about, but it's hard not to worry.

I am with sara27, clomid is being thrown around by everyone and when it fails, it crushes someone. Better to have a full investigation before guessing at diagnoses. Has your doc done u/s, cd3 + cd21 blood work? She should have done random glucose and insulin testing as well as testosterone levels. Not that I know more than the docs, it's just what a nurse friend of mine used to arrange in clinic....and we nurses know everything.

Maybe it's just the healthcare system in Canada but everyone I know has always had very thorough testing before going through any further treatments.

Hope you get all the testing required, remember to be proactive and be an advocate for yourself!

Didn't have have the blood work or u/s. I chart my temps daily. My periods have been a little more regular since she gave me Provera in the beginning, but I am not ovulating every cycle even with clomid.
