Someone told me today that I cant eat philli or cottage cheese? Is this right? Ive been eating philli loads, i love it!

My midwife said it is fine, it better be, I've been having it all week at work! :wacko:
 
Whoever told you that was misinformed - cottage cheese and cream cheese are both pasteurized and are considered safe to eat during pregnancy (https://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancycomplications/listeria.html).
 
Thank god for that haha. Id be gutted if I had to give it up

I was told its safe. It's the fancy soft cheeses that are bad, like brie and feta(except mozzarella).
 
Also, read the packages of the fancy cheeses, too. I use feta made from pasteurized milk on my salads all the time. Yum. I also eat cottage cheese on my salads. :D
 
Cream cheese... I'm SUCH a piggy when it comes to that stuff :haha: my parents used to buy a HUGE block of it and i would make sure we never wasted any of it :dohh: I should weigh 500lbs because of how much I used to eat... I would be devastated if i couldn't eat it while pregnant!
 
Philly is fine, and is actually a very good source of calcium. :thumbup:

I ate it by the spoonful in first tri!! :)
 
Midwife told me it was okay. Which is good seeing as I am tucking into philli on toast right now.
 
I wish I had a pound for everytime someone told me I shouldn't be eating what I was eating! haha Philly is fine :) x

However, just because it says pasteurised on a mould-ripened cheese (such as brie and some goats cheeses) does not make them safe. You should still avoid them. Equally, hard cheeses such as cheddar are fine even when they are not pasteurised.

If I understood it correctly, this is because the production of hard cheeses involves a certain temperature that kills off listeria bacteria. Soft mould ripened cheeses may have been made with pasteurised milk but the mould-ripenening process (which is not at a high temperature in order to keep the cheese soft) can reintroduce listeria bacteria to the cheese.

So going by this, you can eat mould-ripened cheese that's been cooked? Oh yeeeah. Gonna get me a toasted brie sarnie soon.
 
You can eat any cheese when it has been cooked! Just make sure the cheese in tour sarnie is piping hot (melting).
I had baked mould-ripened goats' cheese today. It was heaven!
