You can change the aperture on a compact, but you won't be able to use it to blur the backgrounds like you can on a DSLR.

so in what situation would u change it?? These are all new words to me :lol:

You would change it if you're not in Auto mode - for instance if you want to increase your shutter speed, if you're in a low-light situation, to try and avoid as much camera shake as possible. The combination of aperture and shutter speed help determine the exposure of your photo. This site explains it better than I can:

Make sure you try out the Sim-Cam on that site - it's a great way to learn; I know it helped me when I started out!

I defo need to get the D60 i really want to be able to fade out the background out without using photoshop i always find i can really see whats been photoshopped without looking natural but i think thats cus i cant figure out how to do the layers lol.
