Plastic Surgery for Children

I had mine done twice when i was about 11 then 15 . the first time it never worked , the second time i got the most horendous (sp) infection , ended up in hospital for at least a month and now have a deformed ear, i still dont wear my hair up unless my ears are covered , the bullying was enough to give me a complex for life !
would i let my child have it done ? if they went through what my brother and i went through (he has them too ) then yes of course i would be very worried , and i wouldnt let him have them untill HE asked :flower:

Getting ears pinned back IS NOT plastic surgery. In this country it is done on the NHS, so surely that means that its not plastic sugery. OHs brother had it done at 11, he is so much happier for having it done! I can't believe people think that this is pastic surgery, that like saying having your ears pinned back is the same as having a bood job, or a face lift. Of course its not, you don't see those getting done ROUTINELY on the nhs.

The pinning back of ears is NO diffrent to getting braces. I don't know how people can sit here and say I'd hate it, I'd be torn if my child asked me to do it ect, when I'm sure the exsact same people wouldn't hesitate to get braces for their child. It frustratits me that people will say where can we draw the line. Its simple, ears pinned back + braces fine. Boob jobs, nose jobs ect are not.

To reitterate, how can something be classed as plastic surgery and wrong if children are routinely refered for it if there is a problem and not only is it done free of charge on the NHS but this child in the US had it done for free by a charity! A charity wouldn't just go around handing out unnessacary plastic surgery.

Actually I'd give him the choice, my mum gave me the choice of having braces or not and I chose not.

I think there is a difference between the girl getting her ears pinned back because she was bullied and a girl wanting bigger boobs because she wants to be a glamour model when she is older.

Obviously I would have to think about whether it was right and whether she would continue to be bullied for now having them pinned back.

As for it not being plastic surgery because the NHS do it, they also do boob jobs. My cousin had one done cos there was a cup size difference, but its still a boob job and its plastic surgery, same as ears.

Its all about how it affects the child. If your child is being bullied surely you would want to help them out.... Within reason obviously, like I said above if my 15 year old came and said to me mum I wanna be a glamour model so can I have a boob job I would obviously say no.

Aww my LO has got ears that would make pirates jealous for the gold hoops he be able to hang of them and they stick out too, would i get them pinned back, no way! when hes an adult and makes the choice himself so be. Kids will always find something to find fault about someone its about teaching your kids how they react and deal with it. I also learnt that removing my daughter from one school due to serious bullying didn't fix the problem either.

I had braces when I was younger. I had vampire "fangs" (my eye teeth stuck out) and my parents got me braces. There was nothing wrong with my teeth other than they looked bad. I'm so thankful they did it, I got teased all the time about how I should be a vampire for halloween because I didn't need the fake teeth.

Kids are cruel.

I saw that story as well, when I heard them speak about it they were like "A 7 year old got plastic surgery" and I was like WTF? Then I realized she had her ears pinned back and than I thought that wasn't that big of a deal. I don't think it's bad if it's an abnormality case but if it were something extreme which probably wouldn't even be legal but like botox, face lift, breast lift etc etc for a young child, than it's most definitely wrong.

I don't think having braces is quite the same - I got bullied for having braces as did most people who had them in my year :? its not really seen as cometic here...
I think most parents would get their childs ears pinned back mainly because of fear of them getting bullied.
But like already said kids will find anything to pick on other kids about...
If the child was getting bullied for having a 'bigger' nose would the parents have surgery to correct it?
Or if the child was a little fat and getting bullied, would they consider some sort of surgery?
Or even bullied for having glasses, would get eye surgery to fix it?
I don't think any parent ever would even consider it, although their child is still going through that same emotional feeling of being 'abnormal' and being bullied about it.
We can't sort everything as parents - and as kids they need to learn that people are all different and that it's okay to be.
I personally think they could have a lot worse abnormalities than having sticky out ears...
My LO has sticky out ears as does my OH and some of his family - I wouldn't get her ears pinned back and I hope that in the future she doesn't ever feel in the situation that thats what she needs done! x
