I've a 3 week old 4 day old baby.
I was breast feeding but have been giving formula for the last 2 1/2 weeks as well as breast feeding.

Im now giving him 1 breast milk bottle (expressing) a day the rest is bottle feed.

He's having 3-4oz every 2 hours.

He is only doing a poo once a day and when he does its very loose.

He also seems very windy he farts alot and he seems to be straining tensing up as though trying to fart or poo red face clenched fists. He isnt crying though. This seems to only happen on the graveyard shift midnight - 4am and he's very settled in the day.

Are we over feeding him? Is this wind or colic?

I have him on the aptamil comfort and Ive just bought the anti colic bottles today. Ive also bought infacol for him but I dont want to give this to him if t isnt colic.

Please help, i feel so sorry for the little fella because he seems in discomfort

Hopefully this is not colic - but he sure does seem to be very gassy.

Here are some ideas that helped me with my gassy + colic baby:
- Hold him completely upright for the feed, hold baby upright for the burp and for another 20 min after the feed
- Hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle
- Burp him after every ounce or even 1/2 ounce (bottle fed babies usually require more burping than properly-latched breastfed babies)
- Dr Brown bottles - all colic moms swear by this brand
- Are you cosleeping? If not, prop the bassinet or crib to a 30 degree angle.

Google "the colic hold" - I often burp him while in this position too.

Sounds like gas to me! Still at almost 3 months my LO is up around 5 or 6 in the morning because of gas. We have a few little tricks like massaging the tummy or bicycling his legs seems to help. Then after an hour or so he goes back to sleep and mommy is up for the day haha

If it doesn't seem to be hurting him I wouldn't be concerned about it. Babies on formula often trump a lot, and if they are doing a fart or poo it's normal to strain and go red in the face. If there is also crying or obvious pain with it, then that is a different matter entirely.

Kayleigh was real gassy until around 2 months old or more. She would grunt all night, bring her legs up etc... but she didn't cry out much, but you knew she wasn't 100%. I don't believe it was colic as she wasn't crying a lot and most babies will have gas problems at first while their digestive systems aren't used to everything going on yet. I though colic was crying and being unable to console them... like when I had my son. He would cry non stop from 7-11pm every night for weeks!

Warm baths, warmed up blankets across the tummy helps with gas though, and what others have mentioned above :)
