Hello ladies,
Can any of u share with me positive labour stories of your births if u have group b strep ? I found out I have this yesterday & im scared it will harm my baby girl - my biggest concern is what if the strain I have is anti biotic resistant and I'm allergic to pencillin!

Also any tips for the symptoms as I get swollen itchy vagina!

Thanks x

I had gbs in my urine with dd. I had to have her on labour ward but neither myself or my daughter had antibiotics. I just had to stay in 48hours for obs but it made no difference to my labour or babies health xx

I gave birth to my son exactly one week ago. I was step b positive and the hospital were amazing. I was placed on a drip and as I am also allergic to penicillin I was also worried, but there are a lot if other options they can give you. I was then given more antibiotics after the birth and my son was tested for any infections which came back clear. He was checked for his obs every 15 minutes for the first couple of hours. He was great.

If I test positive I plan on trying some natural methods of getting rid of it then ask to be tested again. It is something that comes and goes and it seems that a lot of women test negative the second time.

I had my dd on monday with water birth no iv and no antibiotics. Shes fine x

I had GBS with my first (haven't been tested yet this pregnancy). I was annoyed at the IV in my hand at first, but by the end of it all I didn't even notice it. They had to give me fluids after the birth anyway, so it was nice I already had the IV in my hand for that. And I was able to wheel the antibiotic drip along with hall as I did laps (I did A LOT of walking during early labour to help move things along faster.)

As for your fears, I'm sure the doctors have come across those situations before and would know how to handle it. :)

I ha it with my son 7 months ago and they just put me on the drip antibiotics. we were both fine. I found out last wk I have it gain and im only n my 14th wk. they hae me on amoxicillin now. gl hun :)

Not yet, but I'm hoping, 'cause I tested positive, too. I'm not worried, though. I was told by my nurse/midwife that they can put the antibiotics through a hep-lock just fine, so it doesn't mean being stuck to an iv pole for longer than a half-hour out of every four hours, so I guess that doesn't sound too bad.

You dont need iv unless you are high risk x

Where I'm at everybody's supposed to get an iv or at least a hep-lock whenever they check into the hospital (group B strep or no group B strep). One of my friends probably should have gone in to the hospital sooner just for that reason, since when she checked in she was already dehydrated (she'd been puking a lot, though) and they had a bit of trouble getting the iv in at all so they could rehydrate her.

Some hospitals still follow that protocol but it's a bit old fashioned, these days more hospitals just use an IV if it's needed.

I had group b strep with my son, tested positive towards the end of my pregnancy and not gonna lie but it scared the life outta me everyday, my advice to you is don't google search too much as it will only make it worse, I was sent a letter stating that I must come straight to the hospital when my waters broke to be given antibiotics as its a risk to my unborn baby, reading that only made me more scared but waters went at 39+1 and I ran to the hospital fearing my baby would be born without the antibiotics but I got there and was hooked to the iv drip and was receiving antibiotics through it every 4 hourly throughout my labour.

My son was born absolutely fine and wasn't given any extra checks, only when the pediatrician came did she tell me to keep an eye on him for anything unusual because I had group b. xx

group b strep is not a resistant strep. Its already classified as group b. You will get either penicillin or antibiotics before you give birth...

I had it three births and all babies born early from something else but no strep ...

its the people who dont get the anti biotics they need to worry about passing it to the baby possibly...

strep before anti biotics or penicillin used to kill people...
the only thing that can sure strep is penicillin or anti biotic..
if step is not taken care of properly it can travel to your heart and cause a heart infection that is very hard to recover from ....that is if they get it in time..
honestly wouldnt play with that........

I don't really see why trying natural methods and then being retested is playing with anything. If it doesn't work then you haven't lost anything.

If you test positive for strep B they do not treat you, they simply give you antibiotics during labour, that doesn't get rid of of strep B in the mother. The antibiotics are given so that they will pass to the baby which can prevent the baby from developing an infection. It is only tested for when you are pregnant because the infection can be serious in small babies. Strep B is found in the digestive and genital tracts of a large proportion of the population and is not generally considered a risk in healthy adults. It is known to come and go naturally without treatment. Occasionally more serious infections can occur, generally in people who have serious problems with their immune system, of course in those cases treatment is important.

over here too just incase there is an emergency and it just makes things easier..

/what you dont know about group B step when left to its own and can happen..
You can get pelvic inflammatory disease..
it can travel to your heart and cause a infection around the heart muscle that most cannot recover from and this is any strep that is over doing it....
group b strep can go into your urinary track and cause all sorts of chronic problems....

so it doesnt just affect the baby it can have bad effects if left untreated for the mom.....its just recently found out in the last ten yrs or so.....

I have bacterial interstitial cystis , that never goes away....and one of the reasons they think i have it is that i did have goup b strep for so long without knowing it.....

It is up to you if you want to be treated but for myself I wouldnt risk it....

strep is a dangerous infection no matter what....where do you think Mersa came from?
It came from a strep that mutated...
JMO

Im sorry, Im not trying to scare ANYONE...

I just wouldnt want to see anyone get sick for thinking ah let me just let this be and see what happens....
step is one of the scarier infections out there....

so please forgive me writing so strongly about this.....
