I was advised to wait until 12 weeks postpartum to engage in any abdominals / core exercise. Is this long a wait standard? Has anyone else heard of this?

I was cleared to resume exercise at 4 weeks postpartum, but I had a relatively normal vaginal delivery. I admit I didn't start until 7 weeks though... no energy with those night wakings and figuring out a newborn. Maybe try something and see how you feel/how your body handles it?

I was told six weeks. Pretty stupid in my opinion as you can't even pick up your child, do anything around the house, hell, even walk up stairs without engaging your core. My physio at the hospital made it sound like you couldn't engage your core at all.
However, as long as you stay away from crunches and sit ups, you should be fine. Ask at your pp check up :) IMO though with juggling an newborn and trying to get things done around the house, I can't even find the energy to do exercise, lol.

I started around 2 weeks. Its whenever you feel ready. Many other cultures that have physically demanding lives just pickup right where they left off. Our bodies are built to bounce back, we're not as delicate as some would think.
