Hi all, has anyone experienced hives after giving birth to your lo?

about 10 weeks postpartum, i started getting little bumps that look like mosquito bites but they only appeared at night mostly and go away the next morning, but they keep coming back everyday and the intensity increases.

i read that these hives can appear postpartum for no reason? is it true? have you had it? i cant find anything that i ate that could have caused it so its got to be something else. could it be stress?

Wish I could help! I got all sorts of odd symptoms after LO was born- things I'd never of thought about! Maybe call and get an appt with a dermatologist? Or as least ask them... they might have better insight. I have eczema- so I get these tiny little red bumps when I break out- and certainly got worse after LO was born. I get them more when I'm hot or stressed too (least they seem connected). But could be something totally different for you.

Our hormones are so crazy after giving birth- it could just be something that goes away as quickly as it came? Sorry I'm no real help :hugs:

I think mine appeared around 2-3 weeks postpartum and drove me mad with the itching! My OB just told me to take some Benadryl until they disappeared. Those were a long few weeks!

I was told stress can cause them or make it worse. It makes sense to me, since they started after I found out my husband was leaving for a 10 month assignment so I'd be raising our daughter by myself for her first year. Once the stress level dropped they went away.

Emotional upheaval has been linked to the physical problem like postpartum hives. The stress after birth can be overwhelming since the new mother herself, needs time to recuperate physically. Find out your stress triggers and try to keep stress levels to minimal. You may find hot shower soothing to itching, but avoid them as hot water may not be good for already inflamed skin.

I think you can take Benadryl but ask your midwife first. Apart from stress, it could be your postpartum medications too. Only advice would be, sleep a lot; don’t agonise over sometimes supplementing breast milk with formula; don’t sweat the pacifier. Fortunately it doesn’t spread to nursing baby, and should be cleared in a month. If not, consult your doc and he might prescribe you a steroid cream.

I get hives ALL THE TIME!! Its drives me insane but they started long before I was even pregnant and have no clue what causes them...
