I was reading the the information hand book that the hospital gave and they mentioned that they do not recommend powdered formula as it is not sterile-I never heard of this before:shrug: can someone shed some light on what they are talking about? I thougt sterile liquid or powder it is all about preperation and how you store it? but they were specific about powder only.

I know the powder isent sterile, thats why you make it up with water over 70 degrees Celsius to kill the bugs.

I agree with you, its more about the preparation and storage, after all you could make it with the sterile liquid and then leave it out in a warm room and it wont stay sterile for very long.

there was some news regarding liquid formula having more bpa leaching in through can linings or suchlike.you might want to give that a thought.

powder is much cheaper. (and better imo)
It isn't sterile but if you make your bottles up with fresh boiled hot water (70degrees or more) then it kills the bacteria, so no need to worry. :)

it's so hard being a parent and wanting the best thing for baby :(

They recommend using the liquid sterile powder on newborns to minimise the risk factors from powder but as everyone has said if you prepare it properly then theres nothing wrong with the powder.

We use powder for our little one. Pre-prepared formula is quite expensive (here anyway). The powder has worked out just fine. I've also heard on B&B about it not being sterile and the only way to make it sterile is to mix it with water over 70ºc. But, I've read not to mix the powder in water that exceeds the temperature stated on the back of the formula box as this destroys important nutrients. I follow the instructions exactly on the back of the box so I can only speak about the formula we use - it's stated to boil water and wait until it's 50ºc to mix with the powder. To make the process go quicker we use the Cool Twister, cools boiled water down to a desired temperature in 80 seconds, love that thing! So, I'd personally go by the instructions on the back of the formula box if you decide to go that route.

I had my baby three weeks ago, and they told us the new "guidelines" are that powder is to be avoided. Only liquid should be used for baby's first year. They told us the reason was because the powder was not sterile, and there is a high chance of not making it right.
I started using powder at 6 months with my first and I didn't have a problem with it. With this baby I plan on switching to powder at 6 months as well as long as the doctor says it's ok
