Hi there, sorry this is a bit of an essay but please please take the time to read.
while I was pregnant with my first child i was diagnosed with a genetic condition (NF1) I have been lucky and only had a very mild case of this hence not being diagnosed until adulthood.
However my condition can be much more severe, things such as multiple brain tumors, loss of limbs, loss of sight, scoliosis, growth deformities, severe facial disfirgurements, to name a few and there is a 50/50 chance of it being passed on.
I definitely want a second child and really really would not be happy with stopping at 1. We had decided to try IVF with the testing so we could be sure that my condition would not be passed on however we were turned down for funding, and we simply cannot afford to risk the £9,000 that IVF costs without any certainty of it actually working. (I know babies cost a lot of money but its not £9k in one go on a 25% chance)
We are currently trying to decide whether to try naturally and have the pre natal tests which will determine whether or not the baby has the condition.
From what I currently know it is similar to the test for Downs, where they take a sample of the blood/placenta fluid....
This has been an extremely hard decision for us, termination has always been something I have always thought I could never even think about doing, however for starters we have to think about our little boy and how he would be affected with an ill sibling, and we also have to think about the baby, the problems could have severe impact on their life which wouldn't be fair, and they then when they decide to have children would also have to go through what we are going through now and i wouldn't want to wish that on my child so i would rather go through the heart ache for them.
I would just like some advice from anyone that has gone through anything similar, or had the tests before.... I want to know when they happen, I believe its between 11 and 13 weeks but is it at the same time as the scan? How quickly do the results come back and just any advice that may be at all relevant would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!
