Pre-preparing formula feeds

My son feeds regularly every 3-4 hours so I always make 1 feed at a time. I keep the water in a flask and prepare each feed 30 minutes before my son is due to feed. It has worked really well so far.

yeah i make the days worth in the morning and just leave them on the side to cool - Harriet seems to prefer milk at room temp which is easier for me so...!

just a point on the microwave... be careful as microwaves have hot spots which can make some of the water hotter than the rest of it! Not trying to tell anyone they are wrong or anything just wouldnt want anyones LO's getting burnt :-)

That's true - but one would hope people would realise you need to give it a good shake to mix it to an even temperature!

I used to make 12 hoiurs up in advance but then my baby got a tummy bug and we didn't know why so the nurse we spoke to said to do the water in the bottles then put the powder in when we need it, just in case it was that. The new way works for us and it's quicker to do too.

Well I do 1 feed at a time ........ what I do do is put the boiled water in a flask and allow it to cool. When LO is ready for a feed, I can easily make it up with boiled water that is already cooled to the right temp...

I do the same and don't find it any effort at all.

At night before I go to bed I pour out three bottles of the cooled water and take to the bedroom along with three pre-measured out little pots of formula. Then when Max wants feeding I just add the powder and feed him - takes 10 seconds to add the powder and shake. No messing, no heating etc.

i make 3 bottles up at a time then put them in the fridge untill needed

I'm so glad I just found this as I was going to ask the same thing! Thank Christ, I was starting to panic about the whole faff of what it says on the tin.

I formula fed my older son and i used to make all the days bottles and put them in the fridge. He is just fine and is nearly 7!

They change the 'rules' all the time.

I make up 3 bottles at the time with hot water, cool them in cold water and then keep in the fridge until needed. I blast them in the microwave and swirl the milk to avoid hot spots - no problems so far.

I was told by my HV that its really important to add the powder to hot water as its not sterile and adding to cooler water doesn't kill off any bugs so I've stuck to the method above.

i'm the same as hattiehippo - i was told to add the powder to boiling water as the powder is not sterile so if you just add the powder to cooled water it doesn't kill any bugs that might be in it. so we make up 2 bottles at night for her first feeds ion the morning (or 1 for if she wakes up in the night which is rare) and then in the morning i make up her days feeds and store in the fridge, so i don't keep bottles longer than 12 hours. I boil the water, leave to cool for 20mins, add the powder, cool quickly in a tub of cold water and then keep in the fridge until needed. to warm them we use the microwave for 30secs and swill the milk round to avoid hot spots. xxx
