Preparing formula- Is this correct?

Hv are useless imh most if them dont even have children round where I live lol xxx

What ive been doing is boiling kettle, filling sterilised bottles to 5oz (for a 7oz bottle), letting them cool, leaving at room temp, then when feed is needed topping up with boiling water from the thermos flask with 2oz and adding formula, shake and go.

Is this ok? I dont know if im doing the right thing?

I've always done the flask thing - just re-doing the contents of the flask whenever I boil the kettle to make a cup of tea so the water in there's always most definitely hot. I think you hit a point where you can drive yourself insane overthinking things and you just have to decide where you yourself want to draw the line regarding risk without making yourself totally neurotic about it.

Out and about I take cartons (well now to be honest I time going out to be when she's not going to be likely to need a milk feed and let her nick my food - or - shock horror - take a JAR - gasps of disapproval - of baby food out with us) and the required number of bottles taken from the steriliser and assembled as soon as removed from there (which I generally do anyway otherwise my husband mixes all the flipping bits of bottles that have been done and not done up and drives me up the wall)... just less to carry that way when I can chuck the used carton away and only carry a bottle home with me to wash (I'm also a dreadful cheat and take disposable bibs that my mum buys in the pound shop of all places with me as well so I'm not lugging soggy manky bibs home).

I use a flask when out with him otherwise I pre make mine. The first few weeks we used cartons then when we moved onto powder started pre making and cartons when out. Can't use cartons now as he has nutramigen, says on the can you can pre make and store in the fridge.

Hi Incubus, my little boy is also on nutramigen now. Do you add the formula to the water and store or just store the water and add when he wants it? I'm not sure if I can pre make them with this formula.

Thanks

I pre make his bottles and put them in the fridge and reheat by putting in a jug of boiling water until its warm enough. The back of the can says "Feed immediately after preperation or store in a refrigerator at 2-4c for no longer than 24 hours" Don't think any of the shop bought formulas actually say this but nutramigen does

I've always done half and half, ie 70 deg water from a recently boiled kettle (within half hour) add the powder, then top up with cold preboiled water I keep in the fridge.

It's closest to the WHO guidelines, in that milk powder isn't sterile and needs hot water to be sterilised and also means you don't have to wait ages for the bottle to cool down to drinking temp. It's always taken less than 5 mins per bottle this way.

The "correct" uk way for formula preparation is the boil kettle, leave 30 mins, make bottle, cool and serve immediately. For standard formula at least. Any of the anti reflux and possibly other specialist milks and that goes out the window, they need cold or room temperature water. After having ds on one of these for a few weeks my ideas of bottle preparation have come down. If sickly kids have formula not made to guidelines then i questioned what's so important with the standard formula. I now make his bottle slightly warm but served fresh. That's my choice though, it's completely up to anyone else whether they follow or don't follow guidelines. You have to go with what you're comfy with.

I use hipp organic which apparently can be made at room or drinking temp.

During the day about 30mins before due a feed I boil the kettle and fill the bottle up with fresh boiling water to just above the correct level (allows for some evap). I then pop our sachet of gaviscon in as it dissolves great in hot water- he has reflux.
I pop a feed cover on the bottle to protect if from anything dripping or falling into it and place it in a jug of cold water.
Take it out about ten mins later and it's almost drinkable temp. I tip in the hipp and swirl. Put the lid on and then it sits out for around ten mins to get to temp. Then feed.

At night I pour boiling water into the two bottles I'll need overnight, again to just above the necessary level. Seal up the bottles with lids and make a flask of boiling water. I also pre make little feed tubs with the powder and gaviscon. When he needs a feed I pour hot water out the flask, pop the bottle in the water container and bring it up to drinking temp. Tip in my tubs and shake. Takes a bit longer for gaviscon to dissolve in cooler water but it does. This night process takes about 5mins which is perfect for us.

We used to boil kettle, cool for 30 mins and etc but it was a killer process and my baby was so beside himself with hunger and upset by the time it was ready he actually couldn't take the milk. That was when feeds times were more frequent and unpredictable. It would be easier to do that now things are more regular.

This works for us.

When I first had Seth I was clueless about how to prepare bottles and got myself into a right tizz trying to figure out the right way to do it (I planned on breast feeding but didn't work out) He was having around 12 bottles a day to start with and preparing them fresh as and when was a killer, but I didn't want to pre prepare as I'd read it was wrong to do. I discovered the hot and cold method on here, and I've been doing it ever since. So I boil the kettle and fill 3 of my small TT bottles with the water, and pop in the fridge to cool. When I make a bottle I put 2oz of boiling water in, mix with 6 scoops of powder and then top up with 4oz of the cold water. This works out as the perfect temp for Seth, and I'm not having to wait for anything to cool down while he gets himself worked up. I've started being lazy at night though and taking a carton and bottle to bed with me, and tend to use cartons when we go out too (otherwise I take 2 small flasks, one with boiling water and the other with cold boiled water, and pots of measured out milk)

Just popping over having a sneak peak and saw this. I used to pre-make bottles rapid cool in sink of cold water and store at the back of fridge! I used to take an ice pack in the thermos part of changing bag when going out xx
