So iv been told to think about what I plan to do next week if I don't go into spontaneous labour...obviously due to having a previous C-section both a induction and a repeat C-section comes with risks...

What will you...would you or have you previously opted for? Im so confused xx

My hospital don't induce using any kind of drug, gel or hormone based pesserie so if i dont go into spontaneous labour, i'll more than likely have a c section. altho there r a couple of ways to induce without drugs which i may discuss with them x

I've never had a section, but here it is preferable to do a VBAC if at all possible. Especially if you want more kids in the future as sections get riskier the more you have. It's a tough call though, especially if they are pushing for an intervention asap (induction or section). I would probably try and go as long as possible before induction though - do they induce at 42w there or earlier? Have they done a sweep yet?

I don't get the chance to discuss until 34 weeks, but I definitely want to try for a vbac. I will ask what induction methods are available but I don't think they will allow the drip (I don't want it anyway) after a previous section.
My sister had her third baby in N Ireland last year (first was a section, 2nd vbac) and when her waters broke but labour didn't start she was going to be given a pessary after a certain length of time. She didn't need it in the end but presumably that is safe for us previous section mamas. She wasn't overdue though.

I will ask about the foley catheter, stretch and sweep and gels/pessaries in case I go overdue or need intervention. I'd rather try these before section if I can.

I'm in Canada too and I'm being pushed into a VBAC but my hospital's VBAC rate is only 34% which is nearly a 70% failure rate. I would rather have a planned section than another emergency one. But I still have to ask my OB about the hospital's policy about induction after a previous section. I was able to go into labour on my own last time so I think that's why my OB wants me to VBAC so it may be a moot point for me.

My consultant was explaining the risks of induction at appointment last week and yes a c section is risky but with these odds (and i won't b having anymore children after this one) induction could put me at more risk of rupture and having surgery anyway.

At the moment i have a 1 in 200 chance of rupture of previous scar if i go into spontaneous labour... so 0.5 % chance. I have a 75% chance of having a successful vbac. If they used pesseries i would have a 1 in 100 chance of rupture and if i am given the drip, i have a 1 in 50 chance of rupture, which is why consultant does not use any of the above induction methods with vbac candidates.

However i get a sweep two weeks today to try and help labour along and at that app i will discuss the balloon induction method as another alternative. If my bp stays low i am sure i can negotiate being left to nearer 41+3 as the hospital dont like women to go anymore than 10 days over here. If bp gets high and i have protein in urine again then i think for both my health and for the best way forward for baby, i'll b scheduled for section x

This is a dilemma I am considering at the moment. Really don't want another section, but if overdue not sure what to do really.

Its difficult. we decide to try for vbac assuming we wont go overdue but the reality is, most likely we will and then have a bigger dilemma to face. Surgery is scary but if it means baby gets here safely and our own health is less of a risk with section then we do what we have to... despite not wanting surgery again x

I had to fight to even attempt a vbac (they are banned in a lot of places here) and my vbac doctor is 6 hours away (although one that will do a rcs is only 10 minutes away, in case that happens) but I still REALLY want to vbac too.

My doctor won't chemically induce, but I go in on Monday and I am going to ask about methods like a foley catheter or arom etc. and also see how far they will let me go over.

I am pretty sure I will go over. DD came almost a week late (although it was a spontaneous labor which is good) and this baby seem pretty comfy in there with no signs of anything close to happening. I also asked her and she said NOT to use things like epo or castor oil to get labor started, although things like exercise is ok.

so I guess, to answer your question I will do all the things, like walking, sex, birth ball, pineapple, etc to start labor but if it doesn't start on time I will get a rcs instead of being induced (even if my doctor did inductions, I just don't feel comfortable with the higher risk personally).

Good luck!

Yeah, I think I might refuse a chemical induction. Even if the increased risk isn't that much, I'm a paranoid sort and I've been the 1% several times already (m/c after healthy heart beat seen after 10 weeks, recurrent m/c, etc) so I know it can happen to me. It's not always someone else who is the 1%.

This is so true... doctor said ok for vbac but not allowing me to go past my due date. So i guess it would be a RCS on my due date 31 Mar if baby doesn't come by then.

I am a little upset when I think about it, just hope our little one comes before due date and we can all have a successful vbac.

Hi ladies thanks for replying...it seems that many of us are in the same position. I still don't know what to do...the thought of surgery again scares me...I am very tempted to take the induction option however im scared this may be the wrong choice and il hate myself for it...xx

Hi just nosying from 2nd tri, whereabouts in the world are you lady? I spoke to my consultant about what I'd like and he was fully on board and agreed, I won't be induced using any chemical form (especially not the drip). I am hoping and praying that I will go into labour spontaneously but even then he doesn't want me labouring for too long and has said that if I am not progressing he would recommend a c section rather than the drip to help contractions along.
I will have a c section scheduled for around 41+5 if I haven't naturally gone into labour so just hoping I will and that my BP stays low too as that was a problem for me last time and the reason I was induced with my first.

As the other ladies I will be asking for sweeps from around 39 weeks and asking about the Foley catheter too.

Hi hun...im in the UK too...its very confusing, it seems like we are all told different things depending on where abouts we are in the UK. The longest they have told me I can be overdue is 12 days...im hoping and praying things happen spontaneously x

Yeah they've said the same to me 12 days, thing is my due date is a Tuesday so 12 days overdue is a Sunday and they won't do scheduled c sections on a Sunday so I'm hoping they don't try and schedule it for 10 days overdue just for their convienience!! I'm gonna try and refuse til the Monday or Tuesday.
I'll be trying everything to get things going by about 38 weeks though I think!!! I was induced last time on my due date due to raised BP so I've no idea if I'd have even gone into labour myself or when!
Definately worth asking for sweeps now though and about using the Foley catheter to kick start dilation. Have you had a sweep yet?

Thanks for your reply :) They attempted a sweep on Wednesday, due to my cervix still being closed it wasn't possible...I was gutted :( They are going to try again on Tuesday. I really must discuss my other options...I think I was so gutted that they couldn't do a sweep that I forgot to talk about all of the different options. My 12 days also work out to be a Sunday...do they not do sections/inductions on a Sunday? That's made me more nervous now! xx

Hope things really work out for you hun...I honestly thought I would go into labour naturally that I didn't bother doing all the little tricks that apparently work...im on a mission now though!! xx

I know at my local hospital they like to do the scheduled c sections on certain weekdays but it might differ from area to area.

I will be induced with a foley bulb (drug/hormone-free!) at 39 weeks if she's not here by then! :)
