I wondered if anybody knows of anywhere in Berkshire that does private combined screening for Down's Syndrome. I know this should be available on the NHS, but I've already got a son with Down's Syndrome and am worried that the hospital might refuse to do it as they will probably class me as high risk anyway and may only say "do you want invasive testing or don't you".

I don't want invasive testing as I would not terminate, but would like an idea of the statistical risk from my current pregnancy only as my son's condition was random and not inherited (his screening tests didn't reveal his condition which came as a total shock after he was born). I'd obviously be a little suspicious of the results anyway, but would like a chance at the screening tests to give an indication so we can prepare for the possibility of another baby like my son they come back high risk.

Hi,

Sorry i don't know of anywhere but i would have thought from a peace of mind perspective it would be worth speaking with your midwife at the booking appointment. Given your history regardless of what you would do with the info you want to know and that should be good enough for them!

Good Luck xx

Caezzybe: I'm here in the US, but I also have a beautiful son with random ds. I'm pg again and refused all blood tests & amnio. I'm 37 yrs old (36 at time of conception) and was told my chances are less than 1%. I was told by the perinatologist that having another child with ds is really low when it's trisomy 21. When it's translocation, your chances are higher because 1 or both parents are a carrier. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you!

The NHS probably would offer you an amnio without screening, but I am not sure they'd refuse you screening if you wanted it. I got the impression my consultant thought I was very odd for refusing testing of any sort, although she obviously didn't say. I didn't see the point in screening as with DS, who has Downs, my risk was 1 in over 10,000. I was 27 when I had him.

Can you ask your GP about private screening> Or your midwife? Failing that, if you look for private maternity care providers in your area, those consultants may be able to offer testing as an individual service?

It's Oxon but I get scanned at Beard Mill Clinic and it's a really lovely palce. Make an enquiry, I am sure she would do that test for you x

I had a sexing scan last week and she looked for DS soft markers for us too. I think she does the triple test if required. She definitely does the NT.
