Has anyone been prescribed progesterone injections in pregnancy due to miscarriage?
I have had 5 miscarriages and I don't ever remember being tested for progesterone levels - only HCG levels.
I have now read that this can be a big help in avoiding miscarriage.
Has anyone else heard of this or had the treatment?
HELP!!

Hi logie68,

A good friend of mine suffered two consecutive miscarriages, both at 12 weeks, so when she got pregnant the third time she was really worried it would happen again. She had heard about Progesterone shots and insisted her gyni give them to her which he did, on a weekly basis, for the first 12 weeks of her pregnancy and she carried to full term. She got pregnant again a year later and had the shots again and had another successful pregnancy.

I am very surprised, after 5 miscarriages, that your progesterone levels have not been tested. I suffered a miscarriage in January at 10 weeks and have an appointment next week with my Gyni to have progesterone tests done.

Hi Logie68, first of all sorry for your losses.
I have just finished my second miscarriage and when I was first spotting my doc gave me some progesterone suppositories to try and keep things going but it didn't work - they don't work if you've already started spotting/ bleeding. But I hear they can work if taken before you get such signs to help sustain an already healthy pregnancy.
I am going to ask my doc about taking them from the very beginning next time I get pregnant (if there is a next time - fingers crossed!) as I don't want to risk going through this a third time.
I'd imagine after five losses, you'd be able to get tested/ prescribed some shots or suppositories. I've heard good things about them.
I'll update when i've heard more from my gynae too.

Good luck
:hi:

My friend went through the same. Around 9-12 weeks the placenta is supposed to start making progesterone. And if you do not have enough then you have a miscarriage. I didn't want to give the 10 page explanation. She went to full term. :happydance: If it helps, I say go for it!!!

thanks guys. i am going to my doc next week to have my levels checked as the midwife says i can have this done at any time. however, she also hinted that, despite the results, it would be up to the gynae if i get progesterone shots at all. seems a bit harsh! i'll just need to wait and see.

You'll have to let us know how the bloods come back!!! Good luck...

:hugs::hugs::hugs: for you chicken!
sorry for your losses...I can only imagine what it must be like having 5! 1 was bad enough!
As for the shots...good luck and a little bit of sweet talking the gyni might help! :hissy:  If s/he doesnt, you might want to get a second oppinon! :happydance:
:hugs:

Hi all don't know if people are still reading this thread but had something to add.
I had two m/c and am now pregnant at 4weeks. Am spotting and so flew back to my gynae in a mad panic and he's given me 200mg of progesterone to take vaginally every day.
I don't know if this will work or if I will just end up getting a period:( but I will keep you updated. The brand is Prometrium and I am hoping it's going to save this one!!!!

Good luck all xx

I sure hope so hunny, good luck :hugs:

shockd and amazed - will be following you, just had my second miscarriage so i know just how scared u must be.
lots of baby dust xx

Thanks girls, am petrified! but just took my 200mg and it SEEMS to have slowed things... am not getting excited yet.
Have been reading madly things about prometrium on net and some women seem to swear by it.
Lack of progesterone/ a low amount of it does seem to cause early m/c so if this one is still fighting, we'll see if the prometrium helps...
Will report back!
Baby dust and luck to everyone in meantime!xxx

Hi, let me know how you get on. We are TTC again and I am going to get my progesterone levels checked on Thursday. It takes 7 days for the results so I am worried they don't come back in time. Good luck xxx

Thanks Logie, and good luck to you too. Report back on yours too - deal? I had my hcg done other day...get results Friday. That will tell me if this progesterone has helped or it's just masking something that isn't to be.
I will let you know! Stay in touch and good luck this month!Xxx

Hi Ladies,:hi:

I just throught that I would share my story with you aswell, I have been TTC for nearly 5 years now I have had 3 M/C and 1 ectopic in that time, I was pushing for tests for ages and they wouldn't do it until I had had 3 M/C, I had my last M/C in October 2007 and finally after having a major tanturm, they agreed to do some tests !!!!

Had tests in November 2007 all of which came back fine for both me and OH!, Saw a specialist and he said that the next time we have a confirmed positive preg test that I would need to take baby asprin and have progestorone capsals vaginally(lovely!), and that this would be next course of action for us, if this didn't work them I would have to have progesterone injections, since we were told all of this I have not fallen pregnant, So I haven't been able to put it to the test so we shall see!!

I really wish you all every bit of love and luck that you get your BFP really soon then we can all have a good chat in the First trimester forum!!!:hugs::hugs::hugs:

Isn't it interesting how one theory can affect so many people? I am hopefully getting my results of my progesterone levels back tomorrow. After researching, i know that they should be between 8-10 if i am not pg but over 16 if i am. I am doing a pg test on friday too so this is going to be some week! I was thinking of getting progesterone cream to use anyway. Does anyone think this might be a good thing?

Hi Logie
Hope you're still visiting this thread?
I've heard mixed reports about the over the counter creams - eg that it's best to get it given by a doc - unless you mean the cream you're after has been prescribed by doc in which case I will shut my mouth!
X

hope u feeling good hun. take it the progesterone is working :)
