Hi, recently my LO has been quite sicky and really struggling with wind(mainly out the botton end!) she has been worse last week or so . i usually giver her 8oz bottles 4 times a day,(she full of cold at mo so only been drinking 6oz at mo)but my doctor said to help her still giver her 8oz of water but only 7 scoops of milk. it does seem to of helped her but is it ok to do long term. or should i put her bottles back to normal . any advice please xx

We've cut 1/2 scoop - 1 scoop from alexs feeds due to wind and costipation too, and asd long as baby is gaining weight as normal, I wouldnt worry.

You could try putting the powder back up again and see what happens?

thanks for the replyi did try a normal feed on her once today and she would only drink 2oz. not sure if that is just a coincedence or not. will probably keep her as she is until she is better and see how it goes after.

i was always told never to put in more or less formula and to give water seperately - guess its another 'where you live' thing

I was told you should never to water down or thicken milk.

You should speak to your HV or MW, its on the can of milk not to mess with their milk as it can make them ill.

V xxxxx

i thought that you werent allowed to do it as well. maybe sometimes its allowed un older babies?! or just different doctors etc have different ways of doing it

We are also told to never put less powder in, or more for that matter. If there are constipation issues I would try and get her to take more water separately, like between feeds and see if that helps

Yep, that's what I've always been led to believe as it can be dangerous to change the powder to water ratio.

If I were you, personally I'd start doing the bottles 'properly' again and if constipation's still an issue then offer water seperately.

i rang my health HV today and she said that it is ok for a couple of days but i should now go back to making her bottles normal and see how she goes. xx

it says these things on tubs for the majority of people, but if a HV recommends it, it is fine to do. I'd be concerned if there was more powder being put in though!

i've seen it recommended loads on the net - i thought it was weird too but my HV says its fine.

yeah i always heard this was a 'bad' thing to do and the milk oz should always equate the water ounces or it can upset babies kidneys. Again i suppose its a where u live and who u ask issue as ive read other threads where people have did this to help with reflux. My Lo has reflux and uve never been told to do that with the milk and she has it bad enought to be on gavsicon and omaprezole. Also i suppose it sounds ok to put less milk in as its just like giving 30z of milk with an oz of water seperately. Maybe its just not good to put more milk in than water.

I was told to do this from my doctor because Brandon has awful diarrhoea but it didnt work so I went back to another doctor who said we shouldnt have done that but should have just been offering water inbetween feeds!! Nightmare!

I would try putting the bottles back to normal and see what happens! If the constipation returns, then I would go back to the doctors! x x x

for a while when i changed milk my wee boy was doing solid poos so i had to add more water to his powder, ie 5 scoops to 6oz of water. After his poo went back to normal i cut it to 5 and half and eventually back to normal, the health visitor said this was fine and it worked a treat

Personally, I'd try her back on 'full stregnth' formula and offer some water before each feed (not a lot) or inbetween feeds or whatever works for you.

WhenFinley was poorly just before xmas the Doctor told me to dilute his feeds 4oz water to 1oz feed  obviously when a doctor tells you you take what they say as gospel (lucily Finley wouldnt take it so we went back to his normal feed) but when I told the nurse when he had his Jabs she said she couldnt believe the doctor had told us to do that & it was disgraceful x Its so hard to know who is right!!
