Hello Ladies, I am hoping you have advice or past stories to share. I just got my result back for my quad screening and my baby has a 1:34 chance of having down syndrome. Now I have to go to the specialist next week for further testing. I will not be getting the amnio, but will do the MaterniT 21 plus test which is more blood work. Did anyone else have similar results and baby was fine? I love my baby no matter what and will keep my miracle baby. I am 28. Thanks!

Hi hun, sorry you're going through this worry
I don't have a personal experience but I just wanted to let you know that when my mum was pregnant with me she was given a very high chance of me having downs. I'm completely fine and she was like you in that she would have wanted and loved me either way. I genuinely hope your baby is healthy but it sounds like he or she will have a wonderful mummy regardless xxx

I don't have personal experience with this, but just remember what 1 in 34 really means...it means that, not only are there women with those results whose babies are fine, but 33 out of 34 women with those results have babies who are fine!! You already overcame worse odds by getting through the first trimester. :hugs:

When I was considering what to do about the nuchal fold screening, I read so, so many stories of ladies who were told they had very high odds of having a downs baby. Some moms-to-be were told they had a 1 in 2 chance and the baby did not have Downs! However, hearing they had ominous odds cast a huge dark cloud on their pregnancies and gave them all sorts of worry.

And of the 34 theoretical babies in your odds number, 33 of them do NOT have downs.

I hope this test and the odds you were given do not weigh on you too heavily for the remainder of your pregnancy, and I hope your little one is developing strong and healthy in there. Keep us posted, mama.

I have a friend who was told that her daughter most likely had downs, and she does not! I know the chances of a false positive are quite high (which is why we declined the screening), so hang in there and keep positive. If you are young and have no family history, I think your chances are slim!! :) Good luck!!

You have a 2.9% chance of having a baby with downs. It looks so much better this way than in the ratio form imo. Those are very low odds and with your age, I think you'll probably be ok! Praying for little baby HUG

I had about the same odds and she is perfectly healthy...don't let the ratio scare you until you know for sure. With my son, they said he would have spina bifida or some other sort of disease...came out healthy as could be...just a little stubborn!

Hi, we were told a couple of weeks ago that we had a 1:10 chance of having a baby with down's, we went ahead and had a amnio (we don't have the other blood test available over here) I just had to know one way or the other. Well after 24 hours we were told that our baby didn't have down's but we would have to wait for another 2-3 weeks to get the rest of the chromosome results - which came through today and we have the all clear. We have a beautiful, healthy baby. I know this is an extremely stressful time for you just keep trying to reminder yourself that you have a lot more chance of everything being fine rather than it turning out to be down's.

Goodluck

I opted not to get the test because it feels they are way to liberal with what they say to expectant mothers. But my friend had a way higher percentage than you. Her baby did not have downs. I've heard a lot of people get told there is a chance. There is always a chance.
I didn't want to deal with being told " maybe" unless it was for sure! :)

When I went for my initial screening the perinatologist said that the test is not completely accurate and no matter what the "risk" comes back you never know. He told me that he had a mother come back with 1:20,000...and she had a baby with down syndrome. And have had mothers that had 1:5, 1:30 1:50 and the baby was fine! I know its easier said that done not to worry....but chances are everything will be alright :-) :hugs:

my brother and his wife were told the same and they had a beautiful baby girl that didn't have Downs. I hope you and your baby are OK x

My boss' wife was told they had an elevated risk of Downs and he told me that the week waiting for the amnio was the longest of their life. Their boy is now 12 and perfect in every way.

I was going to do all the screening until I heard how high the risk of false positives were. I am sending you plenty of hugs and encourage you to take all of these stories as positive encouragement.

Regardless, you'll be a wonderful mom to a very loved and special baby.

Thank you for taking the time to share with me. I was out of town when I got the news and now that I am back I have to set up an appt. with the specialist for next week. It took us years to get pregnant and finally did after doing IVF/ICSI. I know no matter what it will work out the way it should be. It's just hard to hear. I had opted out of the NT scan, but then at the last minute decided to do the quad screening. So we will see what happens next.

My sister (35yo) recently had a 1:35 result and had the CVS test which came back negative as did the other chromosome tests.

She was torn about having the amnio/CVS because of the risk of miscarriage but decided that the risk of downs was higher so she went with it. However, she did think that she had a 35% chance of downs and I had to explain that it was actually 2%ish and those are pretty good odds!

Fingers crossed you get the all clear! :hugs:

Hi honey, I was in a very similar situation a couple months ago. I am 25, this is my first baby and my quad screen told me 1:14 for Downs. I panicked completely but refused amnio, did maternit21 and was given updated results of less than a 1 in 10,000 chance of Downs. After receiving the good results, I had a level 2 ultrasound and baby checked out perfectly with no Downs markers. I am completely confident my little guy is ok. I know how much you must be worrying, and I hope that your other tests come back with good news. Some things to remember as I am sure you know... Quad screen is notorious for false positives, and a 1:34 chance still means the odds are way in your favor that baby is perfect. Best of luck, my thoughts will be with you, and keep updated! xxx

Thank you! How long did it take for your bloodwork to return with the MaterniT 21 plus test? That is what we are aiming for.

My consultant told me (we were just talking while she was doing the scan) that she's seen people with 1 in 10 have non downs babies and one lady that got 1 in 200,000 on the triple test/nuchal scan end up with a downs baby.

When do you have your next ultrasound scan? Even without the nuchal scan there are soft markers that can indicate downs - and if they are not there you are more likely to have a downs free baby. Can't remember exactly what they are but sure google will tell you. Think it's facial features (downs babies tend to have flatter faces/noses) and something else.

My next ultrasound will be July 12th for an anomaly scan. I'm going to wait until then to see if they see any markers on my ultrasound then if there is a concern we will proceed with more testing. Right now, I know that I am just thankful for my baby and that won't change. Thank you all for being so sweet.

The odds are still very much your favor. I lost my last baby to downs. The genetic counselor told us that over half of trisomy babies result in a miscarriage. We did the maternit21 this time, along with nuchal and quad, and everything is clear! They say that maternit21 takes 8-10 days. The nurse told us that most patients have a 5-7 day turnaround. For some reason, it took us about 11 or 12 days. :-(. But it is supposed to be 99.1% so I feel very confident with the results! I wish doctors/ins companies would switch to this test because the quad screening causes too much unnecessary stress. Best of luck with your results...
