I did not know that there is something on the direct gov site that says it is 25th week and how to work it out did not see anything about 8 weeks prior. Might make a difference for me as had to reduce hours due to SPD
I think it's you have to be employed for the 26 weeks leading up to, and including, the 15th week before the baby is due. I've no idea how much you get though as I didn't qualify for it as i earn less than the minimum limit.
To get SMP as someone else posted you have to work 26 weeks before the 15th week before your due date so for you I think thats like 12th August..... so you need to have worked for that company solidly for the 26 weeks prior to the 12th to get your SMP and then you get 6 or 8 weeks at 90% of your standard pay and then the remainder on the same pay as maternity allowance.
If you weren't employed before your pregnancy you can claim maternity allowance as long as you've worked a certain number of weeks in just over the year prior to your due date. I think it works out about 14 months or so and then you get the basic pay you get after SMP anyway which is just under £125 per week
If your entitled to SMP I think your employer should be completing the paperwork for you because the pay comes through the company and they get the money back when they claim it..... (I think). If your only entitled to maternity allowance then you have to complete the forms but your work have to give you a certificate confirming why they can't pay you SMP.
Its all detailed on the forms on the direct gov website anyway, lots of duplicate pages but the guidence notes detail everything you need to put in there
