Maybe this is just something that the formula companies do in Canada/US but I've read lots of posts on here about putting the formula into hot water when mixing it. On the carton of Emfamil which I've been using says to mix it with room temperature water. Why is there so much difference in making up formula here to in the UK/Europe? I've also done searches on Google (I know bad me!) and it says that mixing with hot water can make the formula spoil? I'm so confused!!

My tub says 40 oC. We prepare formula here using water at room temperature. I even use bottled water as we dont have fresh water. Omar is 8 mnths now & we never had problems xx

U can add all formula to 1 oz of hot water to sterilize it then top it with cold water. Formula is not sterile & water should be 70 oC to sterilize it.

I think it just varies, our tub says to boil water than wait 1/2 hour and then mix the powder in the water and then cool down under cold tap to prop temp. tbh I pre-make mine and stick them in the fridge. I have been avoiding doing the room temp just in case there is a bug in the powder and LO will be sick.

Here in the u.s. you dont have to boil water or sterilize your bottles. We use tap water - room temp or colder usually.

In Canada we boil tap water, room temperature then mix, then refrigerate....we sterilize bottles twice a week also!

over the top guidelines in the UK in my opinion and I live there!! lol

Only ever mixed feeds with room temperature boiled water for both my babies and never had a problem, apparantly there may be bugs in the milk that can only be killed if you use boiled water over 70c but from the sounds of things its not an issue in the US or Canada, surely formula is made in a similar way where ever it is made??!! oh and bottles are sterilised for every feed!! x

I use cooled boiled water. If I go out the water may have been in the bottle for up to 8 hours but was boiled and bottle was steralised so I don't see a problem. Bugs in the formula? Never heard of that but figure you could go over the top - I mean I don't steralise my hands every time I touch LO.

I think the only issue would be using HOT water - damaging the formula or burning the baby. I use room temp water while others I know used warm or cold and heat it up.

I only use distilled water because our tap water is gross.

Thanks ladies. There is so many conflicting advice out there!

I was just concerned as I read that using to hot can spoil the water and then read if it's not hot enough it wont kill the germs.

Oh and would never feed the baby with hot water in the formula!

your right the info is so conflicting, there are no clear universal guidelines so i thinks its a case of doing what you feel comfortable with....i just boil the water and fill enough sterilised bottles for a full day and then tip in the powder as each feed is needed which takes all of 2 seconds to prepare....this method was a life saver at 3am!!! xxx

Ive always mixed mine with room temperature water ! it seemed to work bub was ok and it mixed well.

I always used cooled boiled water from our kettle to make up Claire's bottles. :) When we used the condensed canned I mixed it all together in a jug then portioned out into bottles and kept in the fridge.

When we switched to powdered, I would portion out the cooled boiled water in the bottles and then kept them in the cupboard, and would add the powder right before I fed her. We always used room temperature, I didn't want her to reject a colder bottle in case she needed one while we were out and couldn't heat it.

:)
