To cut a long story short.. My idiot housemate left his dirty dishes 'soaking' in the kitchen for 2 weeks, and one day they were covered with flies, so I immediately called him to ask him to wash them up. He did so on the same day but then remarked that there was a fly problem.. I told him that they had been surviving off his dirty dishes and would probably disappear now.. But he doesn't listen to anyone, he went out and bought Raid protector fly spray on the same day, and he sprayed the entire house with it.. He knows I have allergies and that I am 18 weeks pregnant, he just doesn't care :growlmad: I told him it wasn't on but he said that they wouldn't sell it if it wasn't safe and that he'll spray the house daily now and that I should just avoid it for 10 minutes afterwards.. But I'm really worried now, and feeling stuck in my bedroom which is the only room that hasn't been sprayed.. Does anyone know how safe this stuff is, and if it really is okay for him to use it? Not that he will stop either way, but I just need to know, as I'm worrying myself sick :nope:
3 weeks till we move out of here, thank God..

All I can think of is reading the back of the can, washing your hands frequently and defiantly avoiding the house after he has sprayed. Also I think he read the can wrong because you should only have to spray twice. Once to kill the live fly's and contaminate any larva/eggs and then again in 48 hours to stop the life cycle of the larva/eggs.

First of all, it's your house too so take the spray away as it is really not safe to breathe in fumes for anyone, especially pregnant women, for extended amounts of time.

Stay OUT of the house (don't stay in your bedroom unless it is well ventilated, because the spray will just spread throughout the house through open cracks, vents, etc) when he is spraying.

If flies are bothersome, get fly paper so they stick to them and die or use a flyswatter. As long as their food source is gone they will disappear eventually.

I have no idea how safe it is BUT I do know they sell TONS of things in the store that are very dangerous to pregnant women, so that argument is stupid. If it kills the flies on contact it probably isn't good for you.

I'm sure you and the baby are fine because I think it is exposure over long periods of time that do the damage, but make him stop spraying!

I don't even give my dogs a flea bath now that I am pregnant because I read that pesticides cause birth defects and most pet shampoos have small amounts in them. I know I am being paranoid, but better safe than sorry.

Plus, don't be afraid of being a b!tch for standing up for yourself and your baby. You are more important, especially now, and besides you will be moving soon, so it doesn't matter what he thinks.

good luck! :)

I own a dog grooming salon, and I refuse to use flea shampoos with pesticides (Pyrethrins) in them because they have been linked to muscular and neurological problems. I only use flea shampoos made with neem, citronella, etc.

Dawn dish soap applied to a DRY dog will kill fleas, and honestly, a soak in any shampoo should do it. As long as the dog isn't wet first. No need to EVER by flea shampoos with chemicals in it. I also give my dogs Brewers Yeast with Garlic tablets to help prevent fleas naturally, and I have never had them on any chemical flea preventative. Never had fleas, and they come to my grooming shop with me every day.

Anyway, I would def. air out your house and wash your hands etc, but a one time exposure that has already happened isn't something I would freak myself out over. It's done, so just take away the spray and air out and wash what you can. Good luck!
