Question for SAHMs - money

Thank you for all the advice ladies, especially those of you in a similar situation. If my DH was the main earner I would want equal access to the cash so I see that point of view, but I'm also not hopeless with money and would make sure the bills were paid which I'm afraid from past experience can't be said for him so I definitely think I need to have control over our finances unless we want the bailiffs at he door. At the moment he is waiting to hear if he is going to get part time hours at work. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed as it would be the best solution for us all.

We both get the exact same amount of spending money each week, and the rest goes on savings and bills.

That's very fair, I like that!

That's how we did it too.
I agree with all the others who are saying you should have equal access to the money and an allowance is belittling. But I can bet none of them are married to someone who is irresponsible and has no self control when it comes to money and runs the risk of putting the family in serious debt.
I never felt I was giving him an allowance because we decided on the budget together and both got the same amount of spending money. If any bigger purchases had to be made we discussed it and took it from savings.

Exactly, equal access has to mean equal responsibility, it might seem patronising to keep hold of the purse strings but better patronising than debt ridden which frankly is the alternative!
