I don't imagine there's another Aeshna out there (be very interested to hear about her if there is). For reasons too complex to go into here (I've posted the full story somewhere, if anyone's interested enough to search for it), I wanted my little girl to have a middle name that meant 'Dragonfly', but not to actually call her Dragonfly, which sounded far too hippy. My solution was to put it into a dead language: I couldn't find a classical Latin word for dragonfly, though you'd have thought they'd have had them on the River Tiber, so I went to the scientific taxonomy, and found a species of dragonfly called 'Aeshna', which appealed.

I think translating the meaning you want into Latin or Greek can often be a winner. I remember Kate on 'The Archers' wanting to call her little girl 'Beeswing' and everyone laughing at her: if she'd called her 'Ala-Melissa' everyone would have cooed!

Oh, Wantabbygrl: you do know that 'kail' is Scottish for 'cabbage'?

I want to cry! Husband and I have been trying so long we already have the names for a boy and a girl picked out. They are on these lists!!! We aren't telling anyone our names until the child/children are here, so people can't love/hate them, but we've been so careful not to even mention them on the forums! I saw the first one on here, and thought 'no way, they couldn't possibly have the second on" and next list there it was! We're just trying to keep the names to ourselves because it seems like all it takes is one person to say a name and everyone will love it. Maybe we're just losing our minds, but we really feel like we are reserving the names!

Have you thought of something from Shakespeare, he used some beautiful names in his plays.

A few of my favourites are these:

Girls

Adriana
Aemilia
Beatrice
Celia
Constance
Helena
Hero
Julia / Juliet
Katharina
Lucetta
Miranda
Rosalind
Viola

Boys

Angus
Antonio
Benedick / Benedict
Lysander
Robin
Sebastian

But this is a link to a site that has more (some of the boys names should be on the girls list though, they've got Hero wrong for a start) :flower:

Sadly you can never reserve a name. I got a bit paranoid about even thinking the names we liked too often in case it jinxed it and made someone else use it first. And my cousin was really secretive about the names they liked, they were due two months after me, I used Joseph and the first thing they said was "That was our name!" Luckily they had a girl so they forgave me. Hope nobody uses yours, at least until you get to use it first (best we can hope for unfortunately) :flower:

I think I'm relatively safe. Most of my cousins (mom's side) have had so many children they populate most of the Northeast US... no really, I mean this. The only side I have to worry about is my dad's side. Luckily, only one other person is married, and the rest aren't in relationships (crossing fingers). Husband's brother isn't in a relationship (we're pretty sure he never will be, at least a child producing relationship) and my brother is probably going to wait a bit for marriage, he's refusing to even discuss engagement lol! But we aren't reserving the name as much as we aren't telling anyone! It totally isn't sane, but after 3 years of trying, I've earned the right to be partly loopy until we have a + lol.

My mom wanted to name me "Eric", and she told the family.

A few months before I was born, a cousin was born and her mom named her "Erica". Yeah, my mom was pretty PO'd.

LOL I was like that before i had Korben in March, more thought nobody would like it etc,, but my other 3 boys which are 17,18 and 19 now also have unusal names so didnt want a popular name for this one...

Oh good, I'm not alone then! I was kind feeling a bit weird for holding our names so close to the chest, but we've had these names for over 2 years, and they are not only us, but they vibe so well with where we live it's not even funny!
