I read somewhere that pregnant ladies shouldn't have ready made sandwiches such as those from Pret-a-Manger or Eat. or Boots etc because these carry a listeria risk. Are any of you girls still eating these? It seems a bit excessive to avoid these to me, just because if I have to avoid these I don't know what I should eat during lunchtime at work? It really limits my choices.

I still eat them, not very often but I often grab one in ASDA. I don't see how they pose a listeria risk though. I thought that came from things like raw chicken. I know in work I'm not allowed to deal with the raw chickens but I doubt that would extend to ready made sandwiches?

More info would be great if anyone has it!

My doctor said no on the deli meats, or at the very least heat it up.

I am going to skip it just to be on the safe side.

I was told to avoid deli meats too, unless heated. I know women who've eaten them and have been fine, but since I've had no desire to eat them anyway, I skip out. ;D

I asked my DR about this and she said deli meat is okay to eat, just in moderation. I have had deli meat a few times and have been fine. I'm just making sure I don't eat it at every meal and to eat it sparingly.

Hi hun, I was not long in hosptal with hypermesis(bad sickness).. and they gave me pre-packed sandwiches.. so im guessing its all fine.. I stick to cheese and tomato ones like that x

I thought mayonnaise was a no no anyway and don't most prepacked sandwiches have Mayo in them?

Only homemade mayo is not good... most are pasturised (the ones from the shops) and they are ok xx

I think listeria risk can be found in food that's not been stored/ prepared properly, cooked or not.

Mayo's ok as long as it's pasteurized. My doc said lunchmeat is fine in moderation (and if you want to be extra-safe, just pop it in the microwave for a min)

My doc said lunchmeats are fine, just avoid the kind with nitrates (I always did anyway) thankfully, i've had NO desire for lunchmeat this pregnancy! Makes me sick. blegh.

My doc said to heat the meat as well. The only hot lunch meat I can stomach is roastbeef...

What about prepackaged salads?
I am craving one from the shop down the street but I am worried if they washed the veggies properly and I think Dole had a recall...

I wouldnt worry too much with the lunch meats, as long as they are from a good store that will havekept them properly chilled. Think the risks associated with them are extremely small, and if u worry about everything that cud possibly cause risk u'd never eat! I read the other day we shouldnt be drinking tap water because of the chlorine!!! It does get pretty ridiculous. My mum was telling me the Dont eat list was less than a third of the size when she was pregnant and in alot of other countries they re no where near as strict as us. Dont get me wrong I very much try to stick to the list but its not worth worrying too much about, at beginning I wouldnt eat anything just in case until one of the ladies on here pointed out to me that even eating these foods it is very rare they'd cause problems as long as u dnt overdo it xx

I will not drink my tap! We got a letter from the city saying it didn't pass whatever test they just had...

My OB says, "If you heat up your lunch meat, you don't deserve to eat it." Hahaha! She said that you only really see listeria in people who are buying sandwiches from just some random shack or the back of some truck in the city. Don't worry if you're buying from a chain restaurant.
