What is the difference between real contractions and braxton hicks? Me and OH dtd and since it seems like every 20 mins or so I'm having a contraction. But how fo i know if they are real or braxton hicks ?

Most of the time the real ones are so strong you will have trouble talking through them, or cause you to breathe pretty hard... I get loads of BH but only a few so far were painful enough for me to say they were contractions

Trust me you will know.

It will go from strong period pain to feeling like you have been trapped in a vice.

Theres no mistaking it I assure you.

Also- if they get stronger and more frequent- they are contractions.

They don't really seem to be getting stronger but seem to be more frequent.
The way I'm feeling now, my stomach is feeling tight non stop then it gets a bit stronger and then lets up but i don't really lose that tight feeling.

I used to search on bh or real but trust me u will know they get very strong and very close together my labour started slow but they gt very strong like deep pressure like u really need a,poo lol and they will gradually b closer together when they r so close and u cant bare it go to hosp..dnt go too early cos u b sent home ul kno ur in labour trust me..n best thing is stay at home scream n breath it out until u cnt take it no more..once u have baby ul forget the pain..take a bath my mucas plug came our n then it was like clockwork..goood luck u can do it x *

The constant tightness could be babys position, when mine sticks her bum out my whole bump gets tight and uncomfortable

This. If you are comfortable i can assure you they are not contractions- you wouldn't be able to sit here and type if they were! How long is the pain lasting? I honestly wouldn't get my hopes up hun if they don't get stronger- have you lost your plug? have your waters gone?

Hi dear. Like others have said, time will tell if they turn into true labor. It's really the progression, they will get stronger, longer, and more frequent.. To the point where you will know its actually labor. For some women they start out pretty pain less in very early labor, and with time progress into ones that are undeniable labor, so who knows this could turn into something. Time will tell. Keep me updated!!! :)

I don't agree 100%

I think if they continue to stay consistent and get closer together you should just go get yourself checked :)

the reason I say this is because I didn't think I ever felt a TRUE contraction because it never stopped me in my tracks... It was more of a coming and going period like cramp pain. I wouldn't have gone in but my water broke! I went to the hospital and they told me I was definitely having contractions and in labor (obviously) but I didn't FEEL the real horrible pained contractions until RIGHT BEFORE I delivered! If I would have waited until I felt the gut wrenching pain everyone talks about, I would have had him at home or in the car! Better safe than sorry :)

Do these things, and if they are still happening (no matter how far apart or long they are), then it is most likely the start of labor.

1.Drink
2.Eat
3.Walk
4.Shower
5.Nap

If its "false labor", then at some point it will fizz out (that could happen after step 1 or it could happen after step 5, it can really vary). Even if you do all of this and they are still coming every 20 minutes, its still highly likely that sometime in the very very near future active labor will begin.

I'm definitely not getting my hopes up as I have had 2 false labors in the last week ! Had a bath and things seemed to have stopped for a while. Stomach no longer feels tight but I am getting a period type cramp on my lower right side very sporadically anywhere from 20 mins to about 8 mins apart.
My upper back is also killing me and pelvish hurts so much that I can barely move off of the couch to even get a drink or snack.

Im also a believer that if they are regular, you should get checked. I didnt know I was in labor with our daughter, until I woke up in a puddle of water. Evidently had been in labor for a while, as by the time I arrived at the hospital [an hour later], I was already 8 centimeters dilated! Good Luck :flower:

Does anyone feel that they get BH longer and more frequent when under sress..? This i something that I'm noticing.

What guppy said..... if, after all that, you're still uncomfortable then you may be on to something.

I had 3 'false' labours which lasted 4 hours a piece with my first, and then with my 2nd I was in 'slow' labour for 3 days before I had a sweep and it really got going. It could be either of these things or something completely different. Either way, the key is always to remain calm and relaxed.

Update;though they didn't get more intense they got more frequent so i called triage and they told me to go in. Got there at about 9:45 last night, was told that I was indeed having contractions but wasn't dialated at all so got sent home. Got home had a bath and lied down, and at 3 am everything stopped. I actually feel great right now compared to yesterday. Triage nurse, who is a close family friend, called to check up on me about an hour ago and suggested that next time I see my doctor I ask about what we can do considering this is the third time I've been in the hospital in 2 weeks with what I thought was just cramping but was actually contractions, cause as odd as it sounds, everytime they have felt completely different, I swear when it really is time I'm going to have absolutely no idea and think its a false alarm again.
