My LO is 3 weeks old- almost 4 and I am really struggling with Breastfeeding, the first week was easy- much easier than my first time, I was so pleased, but now both of my nipples have huge cuts and I now think I have a blocked duct.

Every time LO latches on its agony- so I've started expressing instead of feeding to give them a break and let them heal- but how long will they need? I am struggling to keep up with my LOs needs- he is guzzling 4-5 oz every 3 hours or so, and then when I run out I have to bf which seems to re-open the slightly healed cuts.

I am struggling to fit in expressing, feeding and look after my 1yrold.

I really don't want to give up as I breastfed my DS1 for 9 months (until he self weaned) and want to do the same again- any suggestions???

PS im going to the docs today about the blocked duct, and to a bf group so will get the latch checked

Are you putting anything on between feeds? Lanisoh is awesome and heals so quick.

I would leave you nipples in the fresh air with breast milk on them. They will be fine in no time. Xx

If your nipples are cracked avoid lanolin as it can contribute to you getting thrush. Instead buy a 1% hydrocortisone ointment, a vaginal anti fungal cream and Polysporin. Combine all three and dab a tiny bit on to your cracks. It will speed up healing. Have you considered using a nipple shield at all? It helped me quite a bit, although long term your supply can be affected

I just wanted to add that it sounds like you have a bad latch. Has your baby been checked for a tongue tie?

Lansinoh, nipple shields, breast shells...combo of the three helped me in no time! Sounds like a bad latch and the shields helped my LO latch properly.

As for the blocked duct I think I had one a while back so I would massage it (towards the nipple) and place a warm cloth over it

Nipple shields were my saviour in the early days, combined with Lansinoh to help speed up the healing process.

Also, you can try doing a feed on one side, the next feed on the same side, then the next 2 feeds from the other side. Gives your nipples just that little bit more time to heal between feeds, and won't harm your supply at all. :flower:
