Hi girls,

wasnt sure where to post this as its a bit awkward to put anywhere as it fits into many sections.

My question is: If/When i next get pregnant would it be stupid of me to ask for a reasurance scan at 7ish weeks??

I dont think its an unreasonable request...and i know ive only had 1 m/c but its the least they can do to put my mind at ease right?? Especially considering they would refuse to test me for any problems until ive had 3 m/c (which i think is f*cking disgraceful!!)

What do you guys think?? Thanks in advance

MooMoo Xxx

I was told I would get one at 6 weeks and then 8. For reassurance. So, I would ask. I didn't have to ask, my DR just offered it to me.

with my second pregnancy i was tld no. just a straight no. i wasnt entitled because id only had 1 m/c and that was classed as normal.
i had to wait untill 4 m/c hun unforchatly to be tested that is the way. 2 m/c is classed as normal in a woman.
you can ask tho hunni :)

Actually, that's probably true Tracie, I never got offered until after my second. I didn't even make it to the u/s for my third one.

alot of drs dnt class 1 m/c as unusual.. i was only offered with my 4th but thats coz my 3rd never gt that far.
i dunno y but its whatnearly all m/w's and drs go by. iv had pregnancys at 3 hospitals. they all say the same.

I definitely think you should try and push for one. I know I will. I asked my doctor if they would give me an early scan if and when I get pregnant again because of what has happened but her answer was "this is so common, if we scanned everyone after they had their first miscarriage, we would be scanning all the time". She then went on to say that they will only do early scans and tests after your 3rd miscarriage!!! I'm hoping I'll get pregnant again quickly and, even if I do have 1 or 2 periods before I get pregnant again, I'm going to tell the midwife that I haven't had one since my miscarriage in the hope they will give me a scan.

I really think it is bad. It just causes us so much stress, and I don't want to go on carrying a dead baby for 5 weeks like I did this time! I just keep thinking that I could be pregnant again now if either my body had done its job properly or they gave early scans.

oh wow... this is not even a question in the US. After my first m/c, my doctor's office gave me an early scan at 5weeks6days. Glad I got it, because I was able to prepare for a second m/c.

The next time I get pregnant, I'm going to get scanned at 7 weeks so there would be a heartbeat *crosses fingers*

probably because in the USA, you have to foot the bill. Here in Canada, tax dollars pay. No one wants to so-called "waste" dollars, so they are really choosey. I remember when I broke my back in the USA, I was offered this test and that test...it was crazy. And then on my way out, it felt like I was at McDonalds when they tried to "up-sell" me a pap smear! LMAO!!! Waaay different here than there.

it's sort of evil, but you can always say you are spotting and have a history of miscarriages if they refuse to give you a scan otherwise. It is dishonest, but it happens all the time here. I have girls come in to the ER just for a pregnancy test when there is a pharmacy across the street! LOL but they are right, I got an early scan in the US because of my miscarriage previous, and they also tested on that miscarriage, even though it was my first. So everything is different everywhere. They never try to upsell papsmears to me though...hmm....:D

here its the NHS they run the same rule everywhere in UK. you cant say youv had multiple m/cs because the hospital would no coz when they get your notes out everything is there * trust me i sent enough time there* plus if you lie and say u have spotting and you dont they have the right 2 refuse you a scan and any other early scan ion the future..
its nt fair butthe way it works here.

I've been told by the hospital that I won't get an early scan next time, but I was at a party the other night and my doc was there too, and I was chatting to him re my concerns about next time. He told me that he can request an early scan and the hospitals have to do their best to oblige. He has sent people for an early scan before as the mother has been so worried about repeat mc that it was affecting her state of mind.

Personally I think this is the route I would take. I would see my GP, and ask for their support. You may not get a mega early scan, but they can probably get you in for something before your 12 week one, and that way you are working with the system, not against it.

It may differ from area to area and doc to doc though....

Because of my medical history, they've told me that i would get a early scan. If they hadnt told me that then i would have probaby gone through my doctor. My friend had a mc, she got pregnant after a year of trying again. Even though she was having problems early on, they refused to scan her til her 12 week scan. Each week her doctor sent her up to the EPA unit and they sent her home again. She was with a different hospital. Its unfair how we're treated.

Personally i would push for one.

My doctors don't deal with pregnancy and they are useless anyway. They prescribed me antibiotics for a urine infection and I'm sure they prescribed me the wrong tablets as the doctor at the hospital looked shocked when I told her what I was taking. She wanted to know how long I'd been taking them but it my miscarriage had already happened.

I may see if and when I next see the midwife I can push for one. Surely it can't be good for a pregnant woman to be worrying so much over the health of her pregnancy.

I asked my doctor if I could have a reassurance scan after I became pregnant following my mc and they flatley refused, they said unless I was bleeding they wouldn't scan. We just decided to pay for a private one in the end and it was worth the money.

Hi Moo moo
I too have just had one miscarriage. I was planning, if and when I get pregnant again, to ask the G.P for an early scan. I've heard some people say that they do that for you for peace of mind, but others have said that their G.P said no. I think it probably depends on the doc. I think just go ask, and make it clear that you NEED it for peace of mind!
Good luck sweetie.

As already stated they dont really give you early scans and some places in the uk are worse than others, like having to wait til you're 12 weeks- like someone ssaid, effing shocking!!. But there we are. Most girls on here end up going private, which is expensive but obviously puts your mind at ease.

I had this dilemma although my siatuation is a bit different as im classed as an older mum so i get a scan before the booking in, but still not early enough usually about 9-10 weeks. This time i was backdated 2 weeks and knew right away that something was wrong. Called the midwife back and asked for a another scan. She said they dont normally do it but she could ask. As it happened things went belly up and i never aksed for one.

I will however point out that even when i started spotting, they didnt offer me a scan until 4 days later...they're really not keen on giving these out are they?

My doctor did say that i could always ask as you never know...

I decided not to go for a private scan as i didnt think it'd be much help to me personally as a scan only shows you that moment in time. Short of me being able to scan myself everyday, it wouldnt help me much...id still worry.( i wish someone would come up with this handy device soon!!! LOL)

Having said that i wholly support this ( and would gladly take any scan i was offered) and have signed the petition (for the government to give re-assurance scans on the nhs for women with mc's) and urge anyone else from the uk to do the same!

All the best girls! :)

I think it depends on the NHS authority you fall under. When I miscarried last year, the midwife told me I'd be offered a reassurance scan at 8 weeks when I fell pg again. However, we took a break from ttc and by the time I conceived again I was told they had stopped doing reassurance scans so I wouldn't get one after all. It was a flat no. We paid to get a private scan done and it was definitely worth the money for us.

We still have to pay here, but indirecty through our national health tax (£30 a week out of my wages) which also makes the health service here awful as our money pays for the people who dont work.

I'd do anything for the level of service you guys get xx

Thanks for all your messages girls, its awful that we should even have to argue for this.. i understand 1 m/c is "normal" but worrying to death in your next pregnancy cleary isnt

Moomoo..well thats the thing. im not sure i would've gotten one when is spoke to the midwife but i did point out that i was an emotional wreck crying all the time etc etc..i think thats why she said she could ask (but that they are very busy blahda blahda).

Surely getting a wee scan doesnt stretch resources that much???
