I love historical novels, also love mystery and fantasy...

I love:

  • Lord of the rings
  • Discworld (read them all)
  • Pillars of the earth
  • Dan Brown's series (angels and demons etc)

So going off that kind of list, or recommend me something out there and unusual, I'll give anything a go!

I know this is an older post, but have a few suggestions:
Lord of the Rings:
try the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones on HBO is based on these). Much more violent and graphic than LOTR, but that same epic feel.

Dan Brown:
try Steig Larson's Millenium Trilogy (Girl with a Dragoon Tattoo, etc). Not the same amount of myth and history, but definitely the same conspiracy feel.

Just finished reading 'A Discovery of Witches' by Deborah Harkness. Couldnt put it down. The start of a series, new one out in june 2012. Witches, daemons and sexy vampires. :)

historical fiction fan here... suggestions:

World without End is the follow up to The Pillars of the Earth set later in the 14th century amid the plague - loved it!

Phillipa Gregory - all of them are good reads - The Other Boleyn being my absolute favourite

C.J.Sansom - anything by him is fab Winter Madrid is fantastic & I also loved all of the books in the Shardlake series (Dissolution, Dark Fire etc)

Kate Mosse - good historical yarns also with a touch of fantasy
