Ay up - I usually lurk over in TTC, but I think I may well be joining you here soon.

I'm on my 9th cycle TTC and not getting anywhere. My partner and I finally had our appointment at the fertility centre last week which didn't go the way I was expecting at all.

The consultant took our histories and had written us up for a lap and dye for me and an appointment with a plastic cup for Mr Urch......then a 3 month wait for a follow up consultation to discuss the findings and decide a course of action.

Then he asked me how long til I am 40. When I told him 2 months, everything changed - I told him that my GP had told me that providing I was 'in the system' before I turned 40, I would get free IVF (the first cycle at least). He said this was true, but that an outpatients appointment doesn't count as 'in the system'

So, he decided that my best chance of conceiving was through IVF and rang the IVF people to push me through ... I am still getting my lap & dye appointment through but he said to delay it if I've already started IVF. He has inflated my TTC tally to 2 years, and said he would hand deliver the referral at the end of clinic (he wrote 2 months to 40 all over it!) He has accepted the results of my laproscopy in 2001 as accurate (no endo or PCOS) so I don't have to have those bits repeated

This was all a bit of a shock - I guess because I'd assumed I was now 'in the system' I thought that I would be able to get the tests done, find out what's going on then discuss a course of action - but it really does seem that things have to move quickly if I am to squeeze in for IVF.

Now, an ex of mine was egg donor for her aunty, and I remember all the rigmarole of hormones and harvesting and it has got me thinking.....if the consultant is jumping the gun to squeeze me in, but IVF is not successful, where does that leave me?
What happens to fertility after the mega egg-production they induce?

On the one hand I am very grateful that the consultant has pulled out all the stops for me, but on the other hand I am worried that there may be other unforeseen consequences

Any advice would be welcome

Welcome. :hi:

I don't have any advice, but wanted to wish you luck!

Egg production isn't effected after an IVF cycle. Your fertility should remain the same following. Best of luck to you!

Thanks Vineyard ..... I see your IVF was successful!

I had the same concerns regarding fertility after IVF ... I collected 11 eggs at my first cycle and thought that it would mean I would go through the menopause a year earlier, but it supposedly doesn't affect it. Apparently I start to grow 10-15 eggs each month but only 1 will mature enough for ovulation, but during a cycle of IVF the ones that don't normally mature, are forced to mature ... if that makes any sense at all!!!

Anyhow, good luck for your treatment - hopefully it'll happen quickly so you don't have any time to worry and dwell on it.

I have no advice unfortunately except to say that I am glad this doc is making things happen for you quickly and going the extra mile for you. Best wishes with everything!

:hugs2:

Well, we have our appointment through - and it's 2 weeks before my birthday WOOT!
I checked with the ACU and this pre-treatment appointment counts as 'being in the system' so it looks like the lovely doctor we saw has managed to sneak us in under the fence.....thankyou thankyou Mr DoctorMan

Congrats you've managed to get in before the big FOUR OH! I've still not heard from my GP but do have 6 months until I'm 40. Going to chase next weekend if not heard anything (as AF is due end of next week so might as well wait for confirmation that it hasn't happened this month!).

The letter arrived in the post this morning (I had been given my appointment over the phone yesterday) and what we are being offered is one cycle of IVF including all drugs - but not the freezing and storage of spare embryos (if we have any) I think that's all our Trust offers people - but still, it was very very good of them to put us through quickly (and if this works, the doctor is getting a huge thankyou card!)

So it looks like the money I have been saving to get the sitting room plastered and a wooden floor is going to have to wait in the bank in case we need it. Mr Urch says he will save as much of his wages as he can too. My GP did warn me about this - saying I had to see this as the year that I devote to getting pregnant .... no holidays (not that we do anyway) and it looks like no home improvements either.

Still, if we get lucky we can use the savings for something nice (which I'm guessing for Mr Urch will involve a Capri - I'll be decorating and buying baby things :D )

And i'm going to have a chat with my mum about it. Most of my family know we are trying for kids, but i dont think they know quite how actively we are pushing for it. I hadnt been going to tell them about IVF but fate has kinda pushed my hand..... I had to tell my boss as I needed her to cover a course for me that I am meant to be teaching on appointment day. Her initial response was that she'd like me to try and rearrange as in her experience the hospital can usually do this. So I had to explain what the appointment is for and that there are only 2 weeks between my original appointment and the big 4 0 , so I am unlikely to be able to change it.

Now, the other company director is my Aunty so, if boss 1 has to cover for me (when her own diary is chocca) aunty is gonna want to know why I am not rearranging....and I can't tell aunty without telling mum first. She wouldnt say anything if I did, but i know she would be dreadfully hurt - so I think its best to tell mum and aunty and swear them to secrecy....

Hmmmm this IVF is turning out to be a bit more public than I anticipated

Awww, I'm happy for you. You sure did get launched into the whole thing didn't you? Good luck to you.

I am feeling well and truly launched BumpyCake

I had a phone call today from the person who had comissioned the course which clashes with my IVF appointment, wanting to shift the dates :happydance: soooo, I no longer need Boss 1 to cover for me and I needn't have said anything

I was wondering if maybe I wouldn't now tell mum and aunty .... but I have decided that I think I need to share what's going on with my family. This is all such a whirlwind thing for me and I really think I need the support of my folks

Hi I just wanted to say good luck. I was 40 a few months ago and we are probably going to go this route soon and have to pay. But I'm stilll feeling quite upbeat. All the best. x

Hi Urchin,

just wanted to pop by and say good luck. Defenitely has got me thinking seeing as Im gonna be 40 in, gulp, 7 months! Yikes! :) Guess I better get on it. Hopefully I will get a referral as I would like to feel i have something like a back up plan, you know? (mc'd twice last year and have since after investigations been diagnosed w/ underactive thyroid which they suspect was the culprit- but we'll never know...) Fingers crossed i guess :)

Really chuffed for you though!

All the best, Omi xxx

Thanks Omi ... if you're only 7 months off 40 it's definitely worth getting yourself into the system - I was very very lucky that the outpatients doctor rushed us through, otherwise we would be looking at a bill for £4k

Just a thought - over in TTC, someone has posted a link to this private hospital https://www.scan-health.co.uk/ which is charging £1800 for IVF (about 1/2 the UK cost) - at the minute they have a sale on, bringing the price down by 30% ... my plan is to do a bit of research into them and hopefully have them as a back-up plan if my free cycle isn't successful

They'll treat women up to the age of 44 - which makes me feel I have a wee bit of time ahead of me
