Reflux support thread

Steph I really hope the nutramagin keeps working for you, we still had an odd bad day but normal baby bad day ifywim. We would have been lost without it. It took a good week to kick in though, I remember posting on here about it worried it wasn't working then suddenly a new baby!

With weaning I have so far been giving veg purees and fruit purees and baby cereal with no added milk. I am still not sure what I will do about milk yet! He did have a jar food yesterday as I was out and it had milk in it but no reaction. I suppose to answer your question I am not being particularly careful, fruits and veg can't go wrong really. But I will have to wait and see how careful I will be with milk after he is 6 months.

I know how hard it is but it does get easier.

That's great! He must be tollerating little bits of milk now then? Or cooked milk?

My gran gave him a jar with milk and he screamed for 2 days, arg! :dohh: Just like when my dad kept giving him milkybar buttons (behind my back) when I had said I was certain he had an allergy/intollerance and we had the worst screaming week ever :dohh: :dohh:

There aren't many cereals without milk, but I think the organix ones are, and jars are a pain in the bum. We mostly have fruit/veg pots.

When we first started the weaning process, I did BLW so that I could monitor every little ingredient (or prep your own baby food if you choose that route). For those of you with lactose-intolerant babies, coconut milk is a really good alternative, it is also creamy with higher fat content to help keep some calories down.

Thats good that weaning hasnt been too much of an issue for uz...im stressing abt it already and hes only 8 weeks!

Xxxx

I'm at the end of my tether today. Last night we had the familiar kicking out before bed after feed, where my 7 wk daughter scratched me, clawed at my face and repeatedly punched and kicked me. Am presuming she was in pain? Same again at tea time today. Mixed in with over tiredness was hell. I want to run away :-( x

Hi everyone, I have a reflux baby too. He had all the symptoms you mentioned in the first post. He cried up to 13 hours a day from 5 weeks old until 4 months and they just kept saying it was colic. Eventually they diagnosed silent reflux and suspect he has a cows milk protein intolerance. He is breastfed and I am on a totally dairy free diet. Tommy is on gaviscon and ranitidine for silent reflux and the ranitidine seems to have stopped working over the last week or so and we are back to square one. I'm hoping the dosage just needs adjusting and that'll sort it out. I can't bear the thought of things going back to how they used to be :(. We've just started weaning too now he's 6 months and I'm pretty nervous about it.

I find it gets ineffective when the dosage needs correcting, wouldn't think a tiny amount would make much of a difference but it seems to!

Weren't you advised to wean early? We had such mixed messages, with two HV saying oh you need to wait till 6 months (one when he was 4 months and I said I was thinking of weaning early) and a HV and GP saying I don't know why you didn't start weaning him at 17 weeks, that's what we normally reconmend for reflux babies! We started at 20 /21 weeks and are now trying for two meals a day!

Weaning has really helped us, together with aptamil pepti it's like having a different baby! He's honestly so much happier it's unreal!

We have the allergy clinic finally next week! :happydance:

Only just found it it's the allergy clinic, so either my doctor sent the referal to them at the same time as refusing to give him neutramigen OR the paeds at the hospital read the referal and automatically put him through to it. Either way, it was 6 weeks between the referal being sent and finally trying hydrogenised milk :dohh::dohh::dohh:

Aww sweetie :hugs: this is exactly how our night went (before last) allll night. Whenever he got off to sleep he would wake up screaming shortly after and the kicking / clawing would go again. :( I spent the whole of yesterday in tears.

I went back to the docs yesterday as gaviscon is not working any more and making him constipated. He have us nutramigen and ranitidine. Well he's been ebf since birth and would not go near that milk - not sure what to do. We can't get the ranitidine until Friday as the chemist has to order it specially. Ugh.

We did have a much better night last night, but only because I put him to sleep on his front. I feel terrible doing it, but it's the only way he can deal with the reflux enough to sleep!

I hope you had a better night last night? Did you get back to see another doctor?

My DD has it as well, poor baby. I found that letting her sleep on my chest with me ina semi reclined position helps on bad nights. Also got ranitidine from the doc yesterday. Things seemed better even after just one dose. We are EBFing. I cut citrus juices and fruits and all caffeine out of my diet as that seems to make it the worst.

This gives me hope for the ranitidine! Glad it's working for your LO :D x

Thanks for everyone's replies. Unfortunately hubby days she's fine and just a bit under te weather... He also blames it on travelling in the car. That just makes her reflux worse but it's not solely responsible :-( she's just like before we changed the milk. I think we both saw a difference on nutrimigen for 2 wks but now bk to before. Don't understand that?... We weren't told to continue the gaviscon so haven't. Do they work well together?
Going to docs next thurs for check anyway so going to ask, if I can wait until then...

What milk do you guys use? Do you think it works?
What meds work? Want to be prepared for what to ask for...

Ranitidine works really well for us. Sebastian recently started with the reflux too and as soon as we gave him Ranitidine he stopped screaming during and after his feeding. Dominic has been on it for a couple of weeks now and he is sooo much happier! I dropped the Gaviscone as soon as they started in the Ranitidine. As for milk, I give them the Aptamil 1st milk and it seems fine for them. Good luck! xxx

lo diagnosed with silent reflux and colic last night! 26 hours of screaming in pain and trying to feed and then emergency doctors :-( he's 4 weeks 5 days x

Thanks, that's useful to know about the dosage. I hope that sorts him out as he's back to being such a miserable boy again lately.

We were told to wait until 6 months to wean and then take it very slowly with him.

Floofymad, the doctors started off with gaviscon for us and then ranitidine and gaviscon together and then we were referred to a paedatrician. We are still waiting for that appointment but if we needed any different medication the doctor said the paedatrician would decide. What I found first and foremost was that I had to push and push to get anything. I was at the doctors about 14 times before I got anywhere. I broke down in tears in the surgery in the end and showed them a video on my phone of his inconsolable screaming and that was the day they prescribed ranitidine.

just 5 days worth of gaviscon to start off with and see if anything improves.. if not back to the doctors!x

Hello,

Im looking to join you ladies. I don't think Samuel has reflux as bad as your little ones.
I went to the doctors today as he coughs after ever feed, arches his back during feeds and sometimes screams when you put the teat in his mouth after winding him. He does spit up but to be honest that i thought was normal and put the other things down to wind.

The Doctor didn't prescribe anything just said to give smaller amounts of feed more regally but if it doesn't improve go back. then went to the weigh in clinic and health visitor basically said its not reflux, its just his age. He is fussing during a feed because he wants to look around the room. He has had his worst weight gain this week, 4oz, he has always put at least 7oz a week on and has gone down from 50th to 25th percentile.

How long do you think i should leave it before going back to the doctor if things don't seem to improve?

Nik

I wouldn't leave it that long really. Havd you looked at the symptoms in the first page to see if he has any others. Tbh I had a problem with our hv as she just said colic. She didn't seem to find it strange that colic meds didn't work!

Who was it told you to wait to wean? I think it's obvious some of them just don't have a clue, they just go by the 'guidlines' even though the guidlines do say that weaning early is reconmended for medical reasons - eg reflux!

We're going slowly, he's just started two meals a day (was having once a day for about 3 weeks), not acidic fruit in the morning and introducing a veg for dinner.

It's sooo messy!

Nikki, I wouldn't go long if I were you and I'd definetely try to see a different doctor. Ask to try gaviscon and see how that goes, did you go to the GP after you knew he had dropped a centile?

HV's can be useless with this stuff, mine was :dohh: mind you, so were most of the doctors :dohh:

From the list he has these

Crying/Screaming during feeds and after feeds
Asking for feeds in between times to soothe stomach
Arching back
Sticking tongue out lots
Vomiting
Squirming/Twisting/Bringing legs and knees up and kicking out.
Not sleeping properly/waking up after not much sleep - only during daytime naps
Waking up screaming
Clingy
