Hi all!

I have been considering getting some reins for lo.

She is walking now, but not at the stage of running away yet so we don't need them to restrain her! But someone suggested that they might be good for keeping her up while she is unsteady. She does fall a lot while we are out as she is not so good on uneven surfaces yet. But surely pulling up by reins would be uncomfortable?

What do you think? Are they worth it?
:flower:

We have a Little Life rucksack which has a parent rein attached, we really like it. Have you heard of those 'Walking Wings' you can get? They're like a pair of reins but are designed to be held upright to help support lo stay upright x

We have some orange ones with a lion on the front that Evie loves :)

I use them most of the time and hold her hand too.

I think they are great if used correctly ;)

I had reins as my son liked to run off a lot but were fab for stopping him falling on occasions. X

I saw those walking wings, but thought they wouldn't last kong enough to make them worth the money. She is pretty good at walking and it will only be a few weeks until she doesn't need any support, thats why I thought reins as they would help support her now, and restrain her if she starts running off later!

Will have a look at the rucksack, thanks!

I love my reins.
Daniel is an independant little soul, and although he isn't fast enough to run off (yet!) he does twist his hand out from yours so he can walk on his own.
The reins give me a tremendous sense of security, while giving him his freedom.

Our reins were a waste of money, if Ruby is going to throw a fit about hand holding she'll do the same about going on reins! Apparently I was the same as a toddler!

Molly has a Little Life rucksack, like so and loves them but then she loves bags hehe. I was about to unclip her here but she wouldn't stay still ;) They're great when we go out to the shops.

I never used reigns when they'd just started walking - it just irritated them when i was trying to pull them up all the time. Now lo is walking confidently i am considering using them to keep her from wandering off as she has a tendency to run!!

If your little one isn't wandering off then i wouldn't worry about them yet.

We have a little Life backpack in Bumblebee :)

Ditto, we have the bumble bee too! So cute! We were tempted by the ladybird one too x

we use reins. Its a simple situation of she isn't allowed to walk when we're beside roads unless she has reins on. We have used them from early on as we wated her to know that reins are just part of walking, along with shoes and coat/hat etc.
Is she throws a fit, (which she doesn't about the reins given we've always used them) then she gets strapped intot eh shchair. This is normally whyshe throw ths fit - because she wants to walk not holding my hand or the pushchair.
I personally would always use reins, and they will get used even when she's 4 if she's not listening to me as a deterent to behave properly/stop running off etc. I have photos of me as a 4 year old as I refused to listen to my parents and so walking in reins and I'm happy to do the same.

My LO loves her reins. From her point of view they are "grown up walkers", she puts them on and then takes her grown up for a walk. It allows her to take the lead and make sure her grown up follows her.

V, that bumble bee is soo cute!! :haha:

I personally have never been a fan of reins, and haven't used them on any of my kids.. just feels like I'm treating them like my dog!? (and even the dog is off lead, where ever possible!) I just always taught them that if they tried to run off, or refused to hold my hand - they wouldn't be allowed to walk :flowers: (not trying to offend anyone who uses them!! Just adding an opinion from the other side :) )

We've got reins for my dd. She won't hold our hands when she's walking and for us it's the only way to stop her from running off. She wants to run off when she's outside. The only downside to them for us is that we think the rein part is to short. They should be made longer. My dd loves them and will get them out of her bag when we don't need them and try and out them on and play with them.

I agree with ginger spice. We've used the reins since she was very early stages of walking and they are just as much a part of going out as shoes. We don't wear them as much now, she is nearer 2 and needs to learn to walk on my hand and stop when I say, but they are still used in busy shopping areas, near the pond and roads.

I also think that it's better to pull them when they trip than let them fall and skin their hands, knees, faces. I dont think its any worse than when you yank their hand if they trip and I think for most people thats an instinctive reaction when a kiddy stumbles. The main thing is they stay safe in whatever way suits you best :)

Thanks for your replies everyone! I think I might get some of the plain ones for now as they are only a few quid and see how we get on. I love those backpacks, so might get one for her for Xmas if the reins are still necessary!

I understand your point Ju_bubbs, it does seem a bit strange to have them on a leash! But I guess if you have a runner who is taking time to learn to follow instructions it is mush safer. I agree with the other ladies about getting them used to it ealier as restraining a chiild who previously ran free is a heck of a flash point. I think I would rather get her used to them now while teaching her to be safe, then hopefully get rid of them quickly.
