Our ped suggested we trial dairy in order to get LO used to it for when we wean. She has a suspected CMPA that hasn't been formally diagnosed. I've been off dairy for the past four months - her rash cleared up after eliminating it so we guessed that was what she had. Although, it could be a coincidence and she just had bad baby acne and cleared on its own. Anyway, I was wondering when/how any of you with dairy allergic/intolerant babies reintroduced or trialed dairy. Did you do it through your diet or theirs, etc..

Now I could be wrong but I believe some dairy products don't cause as strong a reaction as others. I dont know the fine details, but if this is the case (and apologies if im misinformed) you could reintroduce the ones with lower chances of causing a reaction, see how LO gets on and gradually introduce others?

I bf for 16.5 months my CMPI daughter. I trialled dairy through my own diet first (tiny amounts) and thought things were ok, so I had a few Easter eggs (last year) and she reacted badly, excema and bad tummy so I knew she wouldn't cope with it in her diet. I think it's better to trial it in your diet first because if they react badly at least you know it would have been worse with actual dairy in her diet. Good luck with it x

I chanced my youngest with me eating a tiny bit of cream when he was 5 months, all was fine so I introduced other things slowly but surely, he was totally ok. At 4 months he would still react quite badly but I accidentally had something which contained butter just before 5 months and no reaction so I had a hunch he had outgrown it fairly suddenly xx

Thanks for the advice, ladies! Maybe I'll gather the courage to trial some dairy soon. I'm terrified!

I have heard that baked milk - ie. cookies etc. is the best food - trialled through your diet. If that's ok you can start to move onto cheese and yoghurt (in very small quantities) and the last thing you should have is milk. This should give you an idea if baby will react.

I trialled cookies yesterday - 2 hours later Maddie was sneezing and itching :(

Alright, ladies. LO is 9 months old and I've been off dairy for 7 months. Her RAST came back negative so I'm looking to trial dairy. Any more advice?

Well - we trialled dairy last week - RAST negative - she had green poos, bit mucousy, and was up half the night.

Thing is, we don't know if it was the fact she had just learned to crawl or the dairy :(

But I've been having a tiny bit of cheese and she seems to be itchy... so I don't bloody know what to suggest!!

We gave her tiny amounts of semi skimmed milk and she seemed fine, then some whole milk and she was fussy... OH wants to try again once the heatwave is over...

I'm sorry it didn't go well. :( I know the RAST does not detect non-IgE mediated reactions which is what your LO's reactions sound like. Kylie's reactions were a facial and neck rash within minutes of feeding. However, we didn't do any RASTs then seeing as she was only 10 weeks. Has your LO tested positive on a RAST before?

ETA: that's a good sign that she could handle skim milk. Progress is progress no matter how small.

Maddie gets the face rash and starts scratching her neck with apples and pears. But with milk it seems to be GI - scratching her tummy, rubbing it as if it hurts, wind, diarrhoea and very unsettled sleep :(

She's never tested positive on RAST - only had it done at 8 months. My GP is great though and says that's irrelevant, she's clearly got food sensitivities and we've been referred to a specialist dietician xx

I agree! That's what my Ped said, too. Even though it's negative, pay attention to her symptoms over the negative result. I'm hoping this is a true negative - I've lost over 20 pounds that I didn't really have to lose. :(

Both my dairy intolerant sones were completely over it by 8 months, so try. They are both dairy lovers now- yogurt, cheese, milk....

Thank you! This gives me hope. I'm going to trial through myself first starting with baked goods, then yogurt, cheese, and lastly straight milk. If she tolerates that, I'll do the same progression with her. How long do you think I should wait between each step?

I'm sat here in tears because I'm afraid to try this veggie burger that has milk in it. :( I'm pathetic.

Aww hun - remember it is going to cause the smallest reaction possible coming via you and being cooked... compared to what they went through as little babies, it's small fry. Maddie only started really kicking off when we gave her straight milk. xx

Thanks, Rickles, for the encouragement. I'm going to try and work up the courage to try on Saturday when I will have all day to watch her and will be closer to doctors offices.

Just tried some cornbread with milk baked in. Fingers crossed. x

I am almost 99% sure the above pic is a heat rash but my mind keeps over analyzing it. When Kylie was little she had a horrible rash on her face and neck. This is strictly on her stomach and we were outside in the heat today.

It's been 8 hours since I tried some baked in dairy. How long does it take to get into my milk? She used to experience symptoms within a few minutes to an hour after nursing. Should I expect to see them within the same time frame now if she is still allergic?
