I have read somewhere that sleeping on your left side whilst in first tri can increse the chance of MC so, I have spent the last 8 weeks, training myself to sleep only on my right.. Now I have accidently raed something else where it says you have to sleep on your left side, because its better for you... So has anyone heard anything about this???Hopefully I havent tempted fate.. But I will be very pleased to go back to sleeping on my left.. (I am a left sleeper!)

You can sleep anyway you like until it gets too uncomfortable to sleep any other sleep way.

Doc's usually suggest SOS (sleep on side) position, and say that left is best once the placenta takes over. That's as far as I know at least. I have been sleeping on my left side since I found out to prepare myself for second tri and to give it the best chance possible. It's uncomfortable for me to sleep that way, but I'll do anything for :baby:

I think you're ok as long as you are sleeping on your side.

In the first trimester it won't make the slightest bit of difference. The baby is well protected behind the pelvis.
In later pregnancy it is better to sleep on the left side for reasons of your circulation.
Most miscarriages are caused by chromosomal defects which are determined at the moment of conception and can't be changed by your sleeping position.

This. It sounds like scare-mongering to me. Sleep however is comfortable and when you're bigger sleep on your side.

I don't think the above sounds like scare mongering. I actually find it comforting to know things like that about mc. Having had mc'd in the past, I want to do everything "right". Knowing that it would have happened from something beyond my control helps me to stay calm. It IS suggested though that you sleep on your side because lying on your back compresses the vena cava and can make you nauseous, light-headed, and reduce the blood and oxygen flow to the placenta.

I say, do the best you can. Don't stress too much about it, but certainly try to do what docs suggest.

I think she meant that she agreed with me and all the other stuff about how you sleep causing miscarriage was scaremongering.

The thing about the vena cava is only relevant in later pregnancy. For example, I am 11 weeks and the fetus apparently weighs about 10 grams. This is not really going to squash my vena cava all that much yet! Even with the amniotic fluid and the rest. Until you have a nice big bump in your way you can sleep however you like.

Yes, that's what I meant. Sorry I wasn't clear.

I really don't think how you sleep can cause a MC. I'm sorry to those ladies who have had them but the majority are chromosome problems or other developmental problems that are there from the beginning, they're not caused by anything the mother does and I don't think it helps ladies to be given even more reasons to blame themselves for something that was just the cruelty of nature.

I was always told it left side was best, but it really doesn't matter because you cant control how you end up sleeping once you fall asleep...with my other pregnancies I slept which ever way was comfortable, but mostly on my stomach and side with a body pillow...If I didn't feel the baby move I would call the doc and they would tell me to drink a glass of milk and lay on my left side...WORKED EVERY TIME!!!! Of course that is later on in pregnancy!!!

I always sleep on my left anyhow! Back to OH! lol..... :)

I always sleep on my right side snuggled up behind OH.......well until bump gets bigger anyhow :)

Either side is fine but left side is best. Just as long as you're not on your back you're fine!

Again, sleeping on your back is perfectly fine right now, and will not even start to cause a problem until much later in your second trimester. I can sleep comfortably on my back into my third trimester, and have no ill affects, and neither do babies. So sleep how you are comfy. It really does not matter, but if you want to pick a side, then L is best.

Thank you everyone! I think its just because I have spent the whole time trying to sleep on my right, as I normally sleep on my right! I also agree about the MC info, I have had a previous one, so am trying to do everything right so that I cant blame anything for it if it happens again, just that it wasnt meant to be.
