Just a quick question for those of you who have used rusks early in weaning.
At 4 months, did you use a whole rusk or half etc?
I've had a look on the box but can't find any info on amounts, it just says to mash them with babys usual milk!

Thanks!

I tried it today for the first time and I used about 1oz/30ml of milk and half a rusk. I think the amount of biscuit you use it depends on how much milk you use. Just keep adding little bits of rusks until the milk gets a little thicker. If it's your LOs first time just make it a bit thicker than her usual milk, and as she gets used to solids, you can thicken the consistency. x

To be honest, I'd stay away from rusks. They are packed full of sugar. Even the 'reduced' sugar ones are quite shocking.

Organix do baby rusks that have no added sugar if people are worried about added sugar. They are sweetened with grape juice instead. You can mash them with milk or give them as a biscuit just like regular rusks. (ps I have nothing against regular rusks, just wanted to say there is an alternative) :flower:

Sorry, but I didn't ask if I should be using rusks - I asked a quesion for people who have used rusks, what quantity they use.

I am doing a high calorie wean and have been recommended rusks because they are packed full of calories

bubbles123 - thank you, I shall have a look, they sound promising if the calorie content is high:flow: x

If you're not already, try giving her avocado or including it in whatever else you're giving her. It's chock full of good fats and nutrients for babies.

Thanks hivechild..... Can I just ask, how would you prepare the avocado? and what would you recommend to mix it with? LO is still in the very early stages of weaning (sorry to sound a bit daft!)

Also - is there any way of finding out the calorie content of avocado?

Thanks again x

At her age, you could just mash or puree it, maybe mixing it with a bit of her milk to get a consistency she likes.

As she gets a bit older you can give slices as a finger food or mashed on a rice cake or toast. Ronan likes it mashed on toast with cream cheese (suitable from 6 months).

I'm not sure on the calorie info but i think you can find out from a simple google search (I'm on my phone right now).

I'm a bit of a nutjob but this is what I would do.

I use a little electric scale that I just weigh it on and type in avocado.

Unfortunately it does not keep well so I usually plan to make myself something with avocado the same day I choose to serve it to him.

An avocado is in the ballpark of 300 calories.

If you halve an avocado and leave the pit in one half wrapped up and stored in the fridge it's good for at lest a few days and won't go all brown and manky.

It's really easy to make up guacamole though if you have avocado needing to be used up!

Thanks very much for the info, will give it a go tomorrow  while we're on the subject...... Does anyone know of any other high calorie weaning foods good for baby??

Avocado is def. #1 but for a baby 17 weeks or older there is banana, sweet potato, squash & peas (mashed) ~ those are the highest calorie ones for that age group.

We don't really have 'rusks' here in Canada (they are mum mum rice crackers) but they are 10 calories each so I dunno if that's the same thing you have. The fruits & veggies are higher calorie and if it's calories you want, I would go with those instead of rusks just for that reason. Unless of course rusks are different in the UK

Rusks in the UK are very high in added sugar so while they're high calorie, they're not the best source for healthy calories for a baby.

^^ this is why I'm trying to find high calorie alternatives, although rusks are great for a back up! I also need to find things I can make up using her milk as she's on the special high calorie milk xx

hi hum also look into trying the baby cerals like friuty porridge my daughter loves them and they can also be made up with milk

I was going to suggest some of the powdered meals like the porridges with fruit. and you can add fruit purees for a bit of variety (Earl's favourite was tinned peaches wizzed up lol)

Rusks - Earl loved them with mashed banana and a splash of milk (I think they're pretty high in everything )

Managed to get 2 heinz packet meals and 2 packet breakfasts so that I can make it up with her milk.... tried broccoli and cauliflower cheese today and she loved it!!
She's got fruit and yoghurt (packet) for brekkie tomorrow, so hopefully she'll like it.... just so worried that her weight will drop when she goes on to solids :(

Thanks again

going_crazy, summer rain wrote a great post in another thread that has some really good information about good healthy fats and calorie rich foods for babies: https://www.babyandbump.com/weaning...oy-allergy-fats-can-give-her.html#post9247215

Hope it helps!
