SA Test Result Question!

Hi Ladies,

DH has been for a SA, now i know quite a bit about results i.e count, morphology, motility etc and can find what the normal are for these fine.

However, DH has returned and the doctor has said he has 1% 'good stuff' as he put it :dohh: the doctor said they expect to see 2% but this in no way lines up with anything i have read about sperm results.

The doctor has now asked him to make another appointment! it is my understanding that this usually happens in 3 months time but the doc hasn't said anything about that so i take it DH just has to go back and do the test again.

Can anyone shed any light on what these results mean... what on earth is the doctor talking about? I'm feeling really frustrated that this was a waste of time, the doctor has made no suggestion on how he should improve things or anything... as i am a google expert i have a fairly good idea how we can do this but worried that the doc doesn't really have a clue and DH being a man has no idea what he is asking about either.

All comments welcome,
thanks in advance x

Hey MrsRS

I'm afraid I can't really help as I don't know anything about it. But didn't want to read and run.

Someone will be along soon who can answer your questions.

Good luck.

Thanks Redfraggle,

Thing that confuses me is that apparantly (according to the doc) 1% is good but they expect it to be 2%!! no idea where that comes from 1% of anything to me seems virtually impossible to concieve off to me!!

Did he not get the results printed out? my OH's just had a SA an i went with him to get the results & the doc printed it out an explained it all. maybe they will when he does a second?

I wish i had gone with DH now!

I wonder if they would post the results out if i phoned them up... what do you think? Or would Dh have to phone, only i think he's pretty stressed with me harping on about it so i don't want to ask him to phone back again.

I might phone tomorrow and ask for them to send out the results, if they refuse then DH can do another test and next time we will both go for the results... this time to the doctor i see and who should know a bit more about ttc.

they might send them out, they'll have them on record & its worth a try but if he does another it'll prob be easier if u go with him for the results an then u kno what they are an kno all the right questions to ask. good luck :)

if it's done through the NHS, your GP should be able to give you a print off... I'm very confused on the 1%... the only think I can think of is volume, where they like 2ml +... could dh have gotten confused?

and for increasing results, get dh to cut out caffiene :D

Thanks for the replies ladies, the 1% thing confused me too as that doesn't match up to anything especially when the doctor said that was good but they look for 2% so he has to go back and test again.

Maybe it was the volume and DH has gotten confused... 1ml volume... no idea whether that is good bad or indifferent mind you... i was expecting a sperm count, motility & morphology %. It wsa the NHS so maybe they can send us out the result.

Its just frustrating when I know it's not easy for our menfolks to go and deal with this kind of thing and then to feel we are no further forward.

Thanks again x
I think we'll arrange another test and this time both of us will go.

After some googling the only explaination is that the vomume was 1ml and they look for 2ml. Dh reckoned that his count was 40 million which is good for a volume of only 1ml. From what I read they look for a count of 20million per 1ml or 40 million per total so that result is quite good. Perhaps he needs to abstain for longer than 2 days next time.

This is the only explaination I can come up with but I'll still try and get the results sent
out and he will repeat the test

Hi Ladies,

so here is whats going on with this.

DH had a repeat test which this time came out at 3% normal sperm so the numbers we are talking about here are morphology i think.

The morphology test actuallly looks for >14% (for the strict SA test also known as Kruger test), howerver not many men actually have this much. On saying that i think 3% is low but decidedly better than 1%!

Now, the doctor said they look for 2% but what did he mean? who looks for 2% ? I'm imagining that the chances of concieving naturally with 3% is v.slim (even though we did concieve once before). Would you think what he means is that the fertility clinic look for 2% as good chance of concieving with IVF or IUI?

Any thoughts ladies?

Could it be motility? As in, whether it's progressive motility, or whether they swim backwards.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to go to your surgery and ask for a print out of the results, then you have them to hand to compare against the WHO guidelines, which you can find on the internet.

Our GP was crap at explaining - "too low - every thing too low!!!", and to fully understand what all the problem areas were, we asked for a print out and did our own research.

Good luck! :flower:

Hello,
Im not totally sure about all the facts but my OH has poor motility. The Doctor explained they expect to see 50% good sperm and 25% of this needs to be moving/good quality.
My OH has only 5%. WHen we saw the FS she said we could still conceive but it would take longer.
I hope this helps!

i think most of the GPs have no idea to be honest. His words were that DH had 3% good/normal sperm andthat they are looking for at least 2%.

From this the only conclusion i could make was that he was talking about morphology using the kruger scale. To me this is still very low and the only conclusion i could come to about this was that with 3% then we have a good chance of concieving by means of assisted conception! I think we may just wait and see the FS now and see what they say.

Isn't it always the way that you come away with more questions than answers from the GP!
