Salt Dough Question

I've done salt dough ornaments and they've been painted with acrylic paint. Do I still need to varnish? Is there anything I can use instead of varnish if I do cause it takes ages to dry plus is so sticky!

I used wood varnish on mine and they came out great but yeah i've heard that you can use PVA glue and that works well too xx
