Hi all,

Don't get me wrong i have no intentions of ttc for another few years but I was wondering...

I had my first baby 12 days ago; I was induced at 41+5, however I didn't have LO until 42 weeks exactly after a 48 hour labour. She was born via emcs after my labour was not progressing (they told me I was 8cm, then two hours later I was 6cm?!).

In theatre they told me that I wouldn't have been able to give birth to her naturally due to her being back to back and weighing 10lb 1oz and that I'd have had to have had an emcs regardless because of this - I wish they'd have known this 48 hours before!!

My question is... If I get pregnant again in the next few years will I be able to opt for a section rather than vaginal birth? My experience this time wasn't pleasant at all and I'm worried that next baby could be bigger + I could face the same issues as this time, particularly because growth scans aren't standard in the UK.

Any advice would be appreciated

Xxx

Not sure how it is across the pond, but I know that after my mom couldn't have me naturally (breech), she opted to have both my brother and sister (then her tubes tied while they were already there)via C-section with no problem. HTH

i had a very similar experience. In the UK once you've had a section you are given the choice for any future births x

I had my first by forceps and tore really bad due to this I opted for a c-section with my second you can choose in the uk now well I could choose but with my first I couldn't cause it was my first baby but I think they changed the rules now and up to you how you wanna give birth xx

I think that after your first section, you see a consultant with any further pregnancies who will tell you whether or not you can have a vbac or have to have another section. I might be wrong but this is what i'll be expecting with my next one (praying I'll be able to have a vbac)

I had EMCS with my 1st, very similar situation to yourself, ive been told I can have another with no problem.. and I am doing

Yes! I also had an EMCS as I wasn't progressing and Emily was too big and wasn't 'coming down', I had her at 04:13am August 21st and she was 9lbs 6oz! I am now 29 weeks pregnant, and have opted for an elective csection this time. Because I am still very young they are trying to 'encourage' me to try a VBAC but I'm determined to have my section, so I have growth scans until 36weeks and we will decide from there (my choice) x

Yes you can and I would recommend it! I so regret trying for Vbac and ending up with a second emcs. If I ever have another (doubtful!) I long for a calm planned section where I actually get to hold my baby as soon as they are born!

Thanks for all of your help, the more I think about it the more a planned section seems much more realistic. My husband also said that he would feel more at ease too, he completely panicked during this labour - although at the time held it together - and I never realised how much it had affected him.

Xx

Glad you asked this question. We are ttc number 2, and my labour/birth story is very similar to yours. JJ was only 7 pounds, but he just didnt want to come the traditional way :) I am very keen to elect for a section next time, so fingers crossed for us both xx

Good luck, I've heard that they will try and talk you into a vbac but just be persistent!

I asked the midwife at my appointment on Wednesday and she said that ill be checked for gestational diabetes at 26 weeks as this could have led to my big baby and that ill be given medication if this is positive which should lead to a smaller baby. Otherwise ill have a growth scan... Either way I still want a section! Xxx

Thanks hun. I think the first time round we are 'lambs to the slaughter', in that we have no idea and get swept along by medical professionals. I KNEW I had tokophobia, which I believe was a big factor in me not being able to deliver vaginally. In the end I had a very traumatic birth experience, as Im sure a lot of us emcs-ers did. Not with the section itself - I wanted that all along, but the 48 hour labour proceeding it, well...anyway (breathe, ha ha)
SO...yeah, the next time round, they will find they're dealing with a different Chubbin! I will be extremely persistent, and if necessary I will play my trump card - my sis in law! She is a g-grade nurse - and NOBODY messes with her ha ha.
Solstice blessings xx

I had a EMCS as my labour wasnt progressing and babys heartrate dropped. I was 40+3 and she was 6lb11 so not very big.
The section went well but I suffered afterwards with an infection that had me on drips for 24hours.

My OH and I were talking today about possibly trying for no2 in a years time (LO will be 1) and I'm not sure if I should opt for a section or go natural (I guess drs will advise me whats best)
